Several district administrations in Kerala have announced school holidays for Thursday, August 6, 2026, following continued rainfall, waterlogging and the operation of relief camps. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these districts.
The holiday announcement, however, is not uniform across all districts. While Alappuzha has declared a holiday for several taluks and Pathanamthitta has announced a holiday in Thiruvalla taluk, districts such as Kozhikode and Wayanad have limited the closure to educational institutions functioning as relief camps. Ernakulam has no district-wide school holiday announcement as of now, despite remaining under an Orange Alert.
Orange Alert Issued in Seven Districts
The IMD has placed Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod under an Orange Alert for August 6. Although rainfall intensity has reduced compared to previous days, authorities have warned that heavy rain, localized flooding and waterlogging may continue in vulnerable areas.
Alappuzha: Holiday in Three Taluks, Local Decision Elsewhere
The Alappuzha District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, Anganwadis and tuition centres, in Kuttanad, Chengannur and Karthikappally taluks on August 6. Schools operating as relief camps in these areas will also remain closed.
For Mavelikkara, Cherthala and Ambalapuzha taluks, the Deputy Director of Education has been authorised to assess local conditions and decide whether schools should remain closed. Scheduled examinations will be conducted as planned.
Kottayam and Pathanamthitta Announce Partial Closures
In Kottayam, the District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Kottayam taluk. Schools serving as relief camps in other taluks will also remain closed, while previously scheduled examinations will continue without changes.
In Pathanamthitta, a holiday has been announced for all educational institutions from Anganwadis to professional colleges in Thiruvalla taluk. Educational institutions functioning as relief camps in other taluks will also remain closed on August 6.
Kozhikode and Wayanad: Relief Camp Schools Only
In Kozhikode, the District Collector has announced a holiday only for educational institutions functioning as relief camps, and the closure will remain in effect until the relief camps are discontinued.
Similarly, in Wayanad, only schools operating as relief camps, including Pulinjal Government High School, Makkiad Holy Face School and Kaithakolly Government LP School, will remain closed on August 6. Other schools in the district will function normally unless fresh orders are issued.
Ernakulam: No General Holiday Announced Yet
Despite being placed under an Orange Alert, Ernakulam district has not announced a district-wide holiday for schools or colleges as of the latest update. Students, parents, and educational institutions are advised to closely follow official notifications issued by the District Collector, as weather conditions may change and additional advisories could be issued if the situation worsens.
