Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty, in a recent Facebook post, has clarified details about the 25 per cent syllabus cut for class 10 students. According to reports, it was decided that the class 10 syllabus will be reduced by 25 per cent from the next academic year onwards. This has been done to reduce exam stress among students.
The minister, through his post on the social media platform, clarified that, as compared to media reports, the aim is not to cut short topics but just to provide students with only the topics required to be learned at their age and avoid any kind of repetition. The minister added that “It has been noticed that some are concerned that syllabus cuts will affect the quality of education. Any change will be implemented only based on study reports of a committee consisting of expert teachers and educational analysts.”
The minister further pointed out that reducing the content load does not mean skipping important parts, and the same will be regulated by avoiding repetitions and including only what the child should learn at each age.
Reducing Academic Pressure:
Addressing students at the event, Sivankutty highlighted the growing complaints about the extensive syllabus. He said, "In next year's school textbooks, the syllabus will be reduced by 25 percent compared to the current books. The curriculum committee has already approved this decision." He also clarified that the content of the books will remain the same, ensuring that the quality of education is maintained while simultaneously reducing the workload for students.
This reduction in the syllabus is part of a larger effort to make education in Kerala more accessible and relevant to the needs of the students.
Steps for Supporting Education:
In addition to the syllabus reduction, Sivankutty announced plans to prepare a teachers’ bank of retired school faculties, with procedures set to begin this year. The initiative aims to strengthen educational resources and provide additional support for students across the state.
