Heat Wave Alert: Extreme Heat to Continue Across Northwest & Central India
A severe heatwave is expected to persist across several parts of Northwest and Central India for the next three days. Authorities advise people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight between 12 to 4 PM, wear light cotton clothes, remain indoors when possible, and watch for heatstroke symptoms.

Odisha: Considering the rising heat, the Odisha government has announced the summer vacation for schools (School Summer Vacation 2026) significantly earlier than usual. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has declared summer holidays for all schools across the state, effective from April 27, 2026. Typically, summer vacation in the state commences on May 6.
The early announcement of summer vacation follows instances where temperatures in various districts of the state reached up to 44 degrees Celsius.
Chhattisgarh: Schools in several districts have either revised morning timings or declared early holidays as temperatures continue to rise sharply.
Telangana: Authorities have adjusted school schedules and advised institutions to reduce outdoor activities due to extreme heat conditions.
Uttar Pradesh: According to the academic calendar, summer vacation in schools is scheduled from May 20 to June 15, though changes may occur if the heatwave intensifies.
Due to intense heat and heatwave conditions, school timings have been revised in several districts of Uttar Pradesh. In Ghaziabad and Lucknow, school opening hours have been rescheduled to 7:30 AM. Schools will now operate from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM only.
Regarding the summer vacation schedule for UP schools, the holidays are set to begin on May 20 this year, mirroring the schedule from the previous year. According to the academic calendar released by the state government, schools in Uttar Pradesh are expected to observe summer vacations from May 20 to June 15, 2026.
Delhi: Schools in New Delhi will observe summer vacation from May 11 to June 30, offering students an extended break due to the hot weather.
Starting from the first or second week of May, schools in Delhi are expected to remain closed for at least 50 days. Going by trends from previous years, Delhi schools typically observe a summer vacation of approximately 50 days. Last year, schools remained closed from May 11 to June 30.
However, teachers are usually called back three days before the reopening of schools. A review meeting regarding essential guidelines for school operations during the summer vacation and the hot weather is likely to be held on May 2.
Rajasthan: Summer vacation in the state will run from May 17 to June 20, slightly shorter this year to ensure completion of the academic curriculum.
The Rajasthan government had announced the dates for summer vacations in state schools as early as March 31, 2026. According to the schedule released by the Education Department, summer vacation will be observed in all schools across the state from May 17 to June 20. However, teachers have requested that the vacation period be extended until June 30.
Bihar & Haryana: Schools in Bihar will remain closed from June 1 to June 20, while Haryana schools will observe summer holidays from June 1 to June 30.
Madhya Pradesh: Schools across Madhya Pradesh will close for summer vacation from May 1 to June 15 due to rising temperatures.
Chhattisgarh: The Chhattisgarh government has announced school holidays (School Summer Vacation 2026) in light of the severe heatwave currently gripping the region. The state government has declared summer vacations for all government, private, and aided schools from April 20 to June 15, 2026.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has emphasized that the safety of children remains the government's top priority.
Uttarakhand: Holiday schedules vary between hill and plain areas, but generally summer vacations begin from mid-May and continue until late June.
West Bengal: No official announcement yet, but authorities may declare summer vacation soon as temperatures continue to rise across the state.
Kerala:
Following an intensification of the heatwave, the Kerala government has declared summer vacations for all schools. Furthermore, the government has taken a strict stance regarding the conduct of special classes during the summer break. Kerala's Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, has issued a warning stating that action may be taken against any institution found conducting special classes during the summer vacation period.
MP School Holiday 2026: Morena and Bhopal Collectors Declare School Holiday Till April 30
Morena district administration has declared a holiday for all schools up to Class 8 till April 30, 2026, due to the intense heatwave gripping the region. Bhopal Collector has also announced holidays for children from Nursery to Class 8 till April 30.
The decision has been taken to protect students from the adverse health effects of extreme heat, including heatstroke and dehydration. Authorities have prioritised child safety amid rising temperatures across Madhya Pradesh.
