JE Education Desk: A global learning technology business called D2L conducted a survey and found that at least 44% of Indian instructors are worried about how artificial intelligence (AI) would affect teaching and assessment. The results of a poll titled, "Teaching and Learning in India Reimagined" were collected anonymously from instructors at universities around the nation. The study report highlights the increasing awareness among the teaching community in Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) about educational technology and AI-enabled learning platforms.

Pertinent to mention here is that the survey also highlighted the growing demand for ed tech platforms and learning management systems (LMS) in HEIs for which proper training for teaching faculty and strategic use of AI is needed.

The survey report revealed that almost 100% of respondents were familiar with hybrid learning formats, highlighting their growing popularity in the country, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Hybrid learning combines face-to-face and online teaching into one cohesive experience.

It allows learners to learn depending on their preferences or circumstances. This type of learning approach offers a student-centric learning experience with flexibility and personalization.

To a specific query on whether the respondents integrated large language models into their teaching methods, 33% of respondents said that they “partially integrated” these models, while 38% answered negatively. While 11% said they are currently in the process of integrating the models, 16% were not sure about what these models are or how to integrate them into their teaching methods.

Similarly, 50% of teachers felt that LMSs are “improving collaboration and communication” and playing a crucial role in enhancing teaching and learning experiences. Over 50% affirmed that the integration of large language AI models in education will lead to more equitable learning opportunities for all students.

“The message is loud and clear that more and more teachers in HEIs in India are concerned about the impact AI will have on the overall teaching and learning process. They still struggle with ed tech integration into the curriculums designed by the institutions. However, with more colleges and universities implementing NEP-2020 this year, it has become imperative that teachers become aware of innovative platforms like the LMS, learn how to use AI and integrate digital tools into their teaching. Therefore, the need of the hour is to invest in upskilling our teachers and upgrade them as per the changing landscape of education due to technology integration,” says Dr Prem Maheshwari.

To ensure a fairly broad representation of respondents, the survey covered teachers across a wide spectrum of age groups and experience levels in the country.
