UPSC Examination 2026: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has introduced several technological changes for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 and the Indian Forest Service Examination (IFoS) 2026, aimed at increasing accessibility for candidates and strengthening examination security.
Under the new system, there will be no limit on the capacity of examination centers for Persons with Disabilities (PwBD) candidates. Initially, the existing capacity of each center will be utilized by both PwBD and non-PwBD candidates.
The UPSC stated that additional capacity will be created wherever necessary to ensure that no PwBD candidate is deprived of their preferred examination center.
Explaining the rationale behind this move, UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar said, "An analysis of examination center data from the past five years revealed that some centers – including those in Delhi, Cuttack, Patna, and Lucknow fill up very quickly due to a high volume of applications, causing difficulties for PwBD candidates."
He added, "With the new system, every PwBD candidate will be able to secure their preferred examination center, ensuring greater ease and convenience during their participation in UPSC examinations."
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar stated that the Commission has utilized the latest technology to ensure a fair, transparent, inclusive, and accessible examination process, with a strong focus on candidate convenience and ease of participation, while also ensuring that selection is based purely on merit.
In its continuous efforts to enhance efficiency, transparency, and candidate convenience, the UPSC has launched a new online application portal for submitting applications and conducting examinations. The statement said that this redesigned portal aims to strengthen transparency at various stages of the examination process and simplify the application process for candidates.

Civil Services Examination 2026: Vacancies and Examination Schedule
The Commission issued a notification for the Civil Services Examination on Wednesday. A total of 933 vacancies will be filled through this examination, including 33 posts reserved for PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities) candidates.
The Civil Services Examination is conducted annually by the UPSC in three stages – Preliminary, Main, and Interview – to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS). This year's preliminary examination is scheduled for May 24.
Expansion of Examination Centers to Reduce Candidate Burden:
The Commission has also expanded its network of examination centers to ease the pressure on high-demand locations. The UPSC stated that Meerut has been added to reduce congestion in the Delhi-NCR region, Kanpur to ease pressure around Lucknow, and Bhubaneswar to supplement centers near Cuttack.
These three centers have been added for the preliminary examination, increasing the total number of preliminary examination centers from 80 to 83. For the main examination, the number of centers has been increased from 24 to 27, with the addition of Bhubaneswar, Srinagar, and Imphal.
New Application Portal and Enhanced Examination Transparency Measures:
The statement added that, further strengthening its center allocation process, the new application portal now includes a new feature related to examination center preferences. In addition to choosing from the notified examination centers, candidates will be asked to indicate their preferred nearby cities through a drop-down list.
This data will serve as a survey of candidates' preferences and can be used to identify locations for establishing new examination centers, where feasible.
The portal also incorporates technology-enabled measures for photo verification and facial recognition to enhance the overall transparency of the examination process. This step strengthens identity verification at various stages of the examination, resulting in a more robust and transparent system.
These initiatives are part of UPSC's centenary celebrations and reflect the Commission's continuous efforts to evolve its processes in line with contemporary needs, while upholding the highest standards of fairness, transparency, and integrity.
