Telangana Election Results 2023 Highlights: Congress Pulls Resounding Victory With 64 Seats; BRS Concedes Defeat As KCR Resigns Quietly

Congress stormed to power in Telangana as the party won 64 seats in the 119-member state Assembly, defeating the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi.

As per the official information available from the Election Commission of India at 10 pm, the Congress had won 64 seats whereas, BRS won 38 and was leading on 1. BJP won eight seats. Owaisi’s AIMIM won six seats and was leading on 1. CPI had to settle for just one seat.

In a surprising turn of events, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, popularly known as KCR, and state Congress president A. Revanth Reddy faced defeat at the hands of BJP candidate Venkat Ramana Reddy in the Kamareddy constituency.

A copy of the resignation letter of Telangana CM and BRS party president K Chandra Sekhar Rao came out after the Congress party dusted the incumbent government.

BRS Working President KTR Said that his party is disappointed with the results but no sad. 

In Telangana, 0.74% of voters chose the NOTA (None of the Above) option, with the state recording a 71.14% voter turnout. The NOTA option, introduced in 2013, is represented by a ballot paper with a black cross.

Following a Supreme Court order, the Election Commission added the NOTA button as the last choice on electronic voting machines. Before this, voters had the option of filling out form 49-O, but doing so at the polling station compromised voter secrecy.

Despite NOTA use, the Supreme Court did not mandate fresh elections if a majority chose this option.

State Congress chief A Revanth Reddy has requested the Telangana police to organise security measures for the upcoming swearing-in ceremony on either December 4 or 9.

With the party comfortably leading and nearing the simple majority mark of 60 seats, Reddy engaged in discussions with the state Director General of Police (DGP), Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), and ADG CID regarding the preparations for the ceremony.

The event is likely to take place on either Monday or December 9, as per a release from the Telangana Police.

Bharat Rashtra Samiti leader KT Ramarao on Sunday conceded defeat of his party.

While addressing a press conference after the results he said, "Unfortunately the results are not what we expected though we fought valiantly. But, we will continue to strive for the greater good of the people of Telangana and will play the role of constructive Opposition. We also assure all cooperation to the new government."

PM Modi thanked the party workers in Telangana after the results were announced by ECI. He also applauded the people of the state for their support. Taking to microblogging site 'X', PM wrote, ""Over the last few years, this support has only been increasing and this trend will continue in the times to come," he wrote.

"Our bond with Telangana is unbreakable and we will keep working for the people," PM Modi wrote.

Anjani Kumar, the Director General of Police in Telangana, has been suspended by the Election Commission of India for violating the Model Code of Conduct and relevant conduct rules.

Alongside Sanjay Jain, the State Police Nodal Officer, and Mahesh Bhagwat, the Nodal (Expenditure), Kumar had met Anumula Revanth Reddy, a candidate in the ongoing General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Telangana.

The meeting, which included presenting a flower bouquet, was held at the residence of the contesting candidate in Hyderabad.

On Sunday, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao submitted his resignation to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, following the Congress's victory in the 119-member Assembly. Anticipating the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) losing power, KCR dispatched his resignation to the Raj Bhavan via an official channel.

Although initially expected to personally deliver his resignation at Raj Bhavan, he quietly left from Pragati Bhavan, the official residence, in two private cars. It was later revealed that he had conveyed his resignation through an official representative.

As per the ECI trend, the BJP candidate from Ambikapur, Rajesh Agrawal is leading by a margin of 7,636 votes after the 10th round of counting. He has bagged 49,862 votes so far. Deputy Chief Minister and Congress candidate TS Singh Deo is trailing from here.

Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy, a BJP candidate from Kamareddy, is leading by a margin of 625 votes after the 13th round of counting. As per the latest ECI trend, Kamareddy has bagged 41,668 votes so far.

A BRS candidate KTR Rao is leading in Sircilla against Congress' KK Mahender Reddy with a margin of 29,687 votes.

"Grateful to the people of Telangana for giving BRS two consecutive terms of Government. Not saddened over the result today, but surely disappointed as it was not in the expected lines for us. But we will take this in our stride as a learning and will bounce back. Congratulations to the Congress party on winning the mandate." As per the ECI trend, BRS candidate Maganti Gopinath is leading In Jubilee Hills while Congress candidate Mohammad Azharuddin trailing by a margin of 1,648 votes after the 10th round of counting.

As per the latest trend of ECI, Telangana Minister and BRS candidate from Sircilla, KT Rama Rao leading by a margin of 27,920 votes. He has received a total of 67,771 votes so far.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Revanth Reddy won the election from the Kodangal Assembly constituency by a huge margin. Patnam Narender Reddy, a BRS sitting MLA from Kodangal is defeated by Revanth Reddy with a margin of 32,800 votes.

In 2018, the Congress leader had lost to Narender Reddy in Kodangal by 9,319 seats.

As the early trend shows Congress is leading in Telangana, BRS MP K Keshava Rao says his party will come to power.
