Javed Akhtar turns 81 today, October 4, 2026. His wife, veteran actor Shabana Azmi, marked the occasion with a heartfelt birthday note, looking back at his difficult early years and the long road to becoming one of India's most celebrated writers.

Shabana recalled that Javed arrived at Bombay Central Station on October 4, 1964, carrying just 27 'naye paise' in his pocket, and a dream far bigger than his means in a social media post.

She wrote about the years that followed, when Javed slept on footpaths, at railway stations, and inside studio compounds. At one point, she recalled, he went three days without food, with only the clothes on his body.

Javed Akhtar's Early Struggle And Financial Difficulties

Javed Akhtar opened up about those early years himself in a docu-series currently streaming on Prime Video. He lived with friends, slept at railway stations, in parks, studio compounds, corridors, and even on benches.

He had moved to Mumbai as a teenager, and by his own admission, those were some of the worst days of his life. He didn't know if he'd get lunch that day, let alone where he'd sleep at night. This went on for years.

Speaking to Mid-Day, he once recalled owning just two sets of clothes; one would always be at the laundry, so he'd wear the other until it came back.
