Rapper MC Stan, whose real name is Altaf Shaikh (also known as Altaf Tadavi), grew up in the slums of Pune. His father often played qawwali at home, so the music was part of his life from an early age.

From Qawwali Singer To Revolutionising Desi Hip Hop

Born into a Muslim family, he began practising and singing qawwali around the age of 12. Over time, the Bigg Boss 16 winner moved on to b-boying and beatboxing, and eventually to rap.

In those early years, he performed songs like Chadhta Suraj Dheere Dheere and Udd Jayega Ek Din Panchi at local events.

Later, he shifted his focus to trap-influenced hip-hop and underground rap. According to GQ India, he failed class 9 and was asked to repeat the year. Instead of repeating it, he gave up his studies and spent all his time on music.

So his music career began well before he finished his education, and he slowly made a name for himself in the hip-hop scene. It was not easy. In the beginning, he faced taunts from family and friends, and there were nights when he slept on the streets with no money.

He listened to English hip-hop artists and wanted to understand what they were saying. So he took English lessons to follow the lyrics of songs by popular rappers.

In 2018, he released his debut single, Wata. Since then, his songs have included Basti Ki Hasti, Snake, Khuja Mat, Nusta Paisa and Regret, among others.
