Celebrity Couples That Ran Away From Home To Get Married
1. Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were just teenagers when they fell in love. They were neighbours and knew each other from childhood. Because of the religious differences, Reena's parents disapproved of their relationship.
Aamir and Reena defied all odds and kept communicating through their windows, and eventually got married on April 18, 1986, just 2 days after Aamir turned 21.
In a 2025 interview with The Lallantop, Aamir Khan revealed that he had read the Special Marriage Act before their interfaith wedding. His friends Satya and Swati, along with his cousin Anand, served as witnesses.
Aamir also recalled that Reena's family initially cut ties with her and that her father suffered a heart attack amid the turmoil during the India Today 2023 Conclave. He added that he expected an angry reaction from his father. Instead, his father hugged him after hearing the story.

When the couple decided to get married, they faced strong opposition from Shivangi’s family. In an interview with Rediff, Shakti said that Shivangi's parents had locked her inside the house after opposing the marriage.
He also revealed that his screen reputation as a villain contributed to the resistance.

4. Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali
Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali's romantic relationship began when they were working together in the 1950s. Geeta, however, initially resisted marriage because of her family responsibilities, as per reports.
According to the Kapoor Family Website curated by Shammi Kapoor himself, after he proposed at Bombay’s Juhu Hotel on August 23, 1955, Geeta Bali shocked him by saying, “Ok Shammi, let's get married. But it's got to be now.”
They sought advice from comedian Johnny Walker, a friend who had recently married after eloping. He suggested a temple wedding. The couple headed to Mumbai's Banganga temple complex, only to be told by the priest that the gods had retired for the night.
They returned at 4 a.m. and married.
What Happened To Their Marriage: They had two children, Aditya Raj Kapoor and Kanchan Kapoor. Geeta died in 1965 at the age of 35 after contracting smallpox. Shammi later married Neila Devi in 1969.
5. Bhagyashree and Himalay Dassani
When Bhagyashree became popular with her debut film, Maine Pyar Kiya, she accepted her relationship with Himalay Dassani in public. They got married in 1990, despite her parents' objections.
On Smart Jodi in 2022, Bhagyashree became emotional while remembering the day. “There was no one from my family at my wedding, and the same was the case with my husband,” she said, explaining that her parents had not agreed to the marriage.

6. Pradeep Kolhapure and Pradeep ‘Tutu’ Sharma
Padmini Kolhapure fell in love with film producer Pradeep Sharma, while working together for Aisa Pyaar Kahan.
