A major international hacking case involving BTS member Jungkook saw a significant breakthrough on 13th May 2026. South Korean authorities confirmed the extradition of a 40-year-old Chinese national, the alleged mastermind behind a cybercrime syndicate that stole assets worth approximately $25 million (38 billion KRW).

The suspect arrived at Incheon International Airport from Bangkok, Thailand, following a long investigation by the Ministry of Justice and the National Police Agency.

BTS Star Jungkook Targeted In Massive $25 Million Hacking Scam

The hacking group reportedly targeted high-profile figures, including conglomerate executives, venture CEOs, and celebrities. In January 2024, while Jungkook was serving in the military, the hackers allegedly stole his identity to open fraudulent brokerage accounts.

The syndicate attempted to transfer 33,500 HYBE shares belonging to the singer, valued at roughly $5.6 million to $6.1 million (8.4 billion KRW). Fortunately, HYBE and Big Hit Music detected the suspicious activity immediately and froze the transactions, preventing any actual financial loss. Following the incident, Jungkook won a civil lawsuit to ensure the return of all targeted shares, reinforcing his legal rights against identity theft.

How The International Hacking Ring Operated?

Investigators revealed that the syndicate operated a sophisticated network across several countries, primarily based in Thailand. Between August 2023 and April 2025, the group allegedly:

  • Hacked websites of budget mobile phone carriers to steal personal data.
  • Used stolen identities to pass security checks and open fraudulent accounts.
  • Gained unauthorised access to bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets.

South Korean police have made several arrests in connection with the ring. Another leader, a 36-year-old Chinese national, was previously extradited in August 2025 and is currently standing trial.
