The Indian film industry is mourning the sad demise of veteran producer-director and former CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani, who passed away at the age of 76. Known as one of Bollywood's most successful commercial filmmakers, Nihalani had an extraordinary knack for spotting raw talent. He completely transformed the landscape of 90s cinema by introducing audiences to legendary stars like Govinda and Chunky Panday, leaving behind an indelible mark on Indian pop culture.
Pahlaj Nihalani’s Early Life and Cinematic Vision
Born on January 10, 1950, Pahlaj Nihalani developed a deep passion for cinema as a kid and headed straight to the bright lights and glamour of Mumbai. He built his film skills starting at the bottom. During the late 70s and early 80s, when Hindi films became more about action and drama, Nihalani became an independent producer.
He aimed to make entertaining masala films that common people and die-hard theater fans would enjoy. He debuted successfully with Hathkadi in 1982, followed by the box-office winner Aandhi-Toofan in 1985.
Pahlaj Nihalani Launched Govinda In Bollywood
Nihalani's greatest contribution to Bollywood was launching Govinda. Initially, the filmmaker intended to cast Mithun Chakraborty and Shatrughan Sinha but ran into scheduling issues. When young Govinda approached him, Nihalani actually disliked Govinda’s portfolio photos.
However, after seeing a video that showcased Govinda’s amazing dancing and action skills, Nihalani gave him a role in Ilzaam in 1986. This movie was a huge success, turning Govinda into an overnight icon. he duo later delivered massive hits like Shola Aur Shabnam (1992).
Creating 90s Icons And Hits
Nihalani didn't stop with Govinda. In 1987, he gave Chunky Panday his big break with Aag Hi Aag, instantly boosting his career. Years later, in 1993, he brought Govinda and Chunky together for Aankhen, which became the highest-grossing film of that year. He was also instrumental in shaping the stardom of late actress Divya Bharti and worked with top industry veterans like Dharmendra.
The Controversial Sanskari Chairman
Between 2015 and 2017, Nihalani served as the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). His tenure became highly controversial due to his aggressive filtering of foul language, smoking scenes, and politically sensitive content, earning him the nickname 'Sanskari' chairman. His strict approach, notably demanding 69 cuts in the movie Udta Punjab, faced massive backlash from filmmakers, leading to his removal from the post in August 2017.
