Jana Nayagan Censor Row Update: Thalapathy Vijay starrer Tamil film Jana Nayagan suffered a significant setback on Tuesday when the Madras High Court overturned the single judge's decision to grant the highly anticipated film a censor certificate, further postponing its release. The Division Bench determined that the case needed to be reexamined since the CBFC was not given enough time to record its response before the sole judge became involved.

Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan cited accusations against the Jana Nayagan's content, which included scenes showing the armed forces in a negative light and foregoing powers causing unrest in the nation.

The Division Bench granted the Central Board of Film Certification's appeal, noting that the single judge had made a mistake by considering the merits of a content complaint without first allowing the authorities to submit a counter-affidavit. "Single-judge ought not to have gone into merits. Decision of the writ court has to go, the appeal is allowed and the impugned order is set aside. The writ petitioner is given opportunity to amend the writ petition (sic), " said the Division Bench, as quoted by Livemint.

Jana Nayagan Censor Delay EXPLAINED

Jana Nayagan producers, KVN Productions, filed a complaint to the High Court about the CBFC's alleged excessive delay in giving the final censor certificate, even though they had complied with all of the Examining Committee's suggested cuts and adjustments. The producers applied for certification on December 18, 2025, according to court filings. The Examining Committee then suggested a UA 16+ certificate, noting violent scenes, battle scenes, graphic images, and fleeting allusions to religious beliefs. The producers claimed that all of the directed changes and excisions had been carried out.

On December 24, 2025, a revised version of the movie was resubmitted; on December 29, the revisions were confirmed, and the producers were notified that UA 16+ certification would be granted. However, according to an email dated January 5, the movie was being referred to a Revising Committee in accordance with Rule 24 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules due to a complaint that claimed it inaccurately depicted the armed services and would offend religious sensitivities. It turned out that one of the Examining Committee's own members had filed the complaint.

Jana Nayagan was promoted as Thalapathy Vijay's final movie before entering politics full-time. Originally slated to debut in theatres across the globe on January 9 ahead of the Pongal festival, the movie continues to struggle for a new date.
