Madhubala and Dilip Kumar's nine-year relationship had reached the point of engagement, with marriage seemingly on the cards. But a professional dispute over BR Chopra's Naya Daur (1957) brought their relationship to a turning point. Dilip Kumar supported the filmmaker in a legal battle involving Madhubala and her father, Ataullah Khan. The disagreement eventually followed the couple into their personal lives, which led to the end of their nine-year relationship.
According to Madhubala's younger sister, Madhur Bhushan, the actress was prepared to marry Dilip Kumar even after the courtroom confrontation. She wanted him to visit their house, apologise to her father and embrace him. But he refused.
In a 2013 interview with Filmfare, Madhur said the relationship ended after that refusal. Dilip Kumar, however, offered a different explanation in his autobiography, placing the disagreement over his professional independence at the centre of their separation.
Madhubala And Dilip Kumar Were Engaged After Meeting On Tarana Sets
Madhubala and Dilip Kumar reportedly fell in love while working together on the 1951 film Tarana. Their pairing subsequently appeared in Sangdil (1952), Amar (1954) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960).
In her 2013 Filmfare interview with Farhana Farook, Madhur Bhushan said the relationship lasted nine years and the two actors were engaged. She recalled that Dilip Kumar's sister had visited their home with a chunni, a traditional gesture associated with the engagement.
Madhur also challenged the widely circulated account that Ataullah Khan was against the marriage. According to her, their father liked Dilip Kumar and had welcomed him into the family. She said the family was financially secure by then and there was no reason for him to prevent the marriage.
"He'd often come home. He has even seen me in my school uniform," Madhur recalled, describing how Dilip Kumar would visit their house and spend time with Madhubala.
The situation changed during the production of Naya Daur, directed by BR Chopra and starring Dilip Kumar.
What Happened Between Madhubala And BR Chopra During Naya Daur?
Madhubala was initially cast opposite Dilip Kumar in Naya Daur. However, after shooting for approximately 10 days, she withdrew from the project following objections from her father over its outdoor schedule.
In her Filmfare interview, Madhur explained that the unit was supposed to shoot in the Gwalior region. Her father was concerned about his daughter's safety after an incident involving another film unit shooting where women had been attacked by a mob, with their clothes torn.
She maintained that her father was not opposed to Madhubala working outdoors. The actress had previously travelled for shoots in Mahabaleshwar and Hyderabad. His objection, she said, was specific to the proposed location and the risks involved.
BR Chopra, however, had already planned the film around extensive outdoor shooting. After Madhubala's exit, he replaced her with Vyjayanthimala and the disagreement escalated into a legal dispute.
In a 1997 interview with journalist Sharmila Taliculam, BR Chopra recalled that Madhubala had completed around 10 days of work before her father refused to let her travel for the remaining schedule. He said the filmmaker had already specified the shooting requirements.
Chopra also recalled that the judge asked whether the film could be shot indoors. He refused, explaining that the story required extensive shooting in village surroundings. The filmmaker won the case.
Dilip Kumar's Courtroom Testimony Reportedly Damaged His Relationship With Madhubala
The legal dispute became particularly damaging because Dilip Kumar was caught between his co-star and her father on one side and the filmmaker on the other.
According to Madhur, Dilip Kumar supported BR Chopra during the proceedings and described Ataullah Khan as a "dictator" in court. This deeply upset Madhubala, who had expected her partner to understand her family's concerns.
In the 2013 Filmfare interview, Madhur questioned why Dilip Kumar had not remained neutral or suggested changing the shooting location. She said the actress was devastated by his position, and the two subsequently struggled to repair their relationship.
Madhubala Wanted Dilip Kumar To Apologise To Her Father Before Marriage
According to Madhur, Dilip Kumar eventually visited Madhubala's home after the court dispute. He suggested that she complete her pending film commitments so they could proceed with their marriage.
Madhubala agreed, but attached one condition: he had to apologise to her father.
In the interview, Madhur recalled Madhubala telling Dilip Kumar: "I'll marry you but just come home, say sorry and hug him."
Dilip Kumar reportedly refused. Madhur attributed his decision to what she described as his ego, saying her sister eventually made it clear that she could not marry him without the apology.
"That was zid (ego) which destroyed their love," Madhur told Filmfare.
What Dilip Kumar Wrote About His Breakup With Madhubala?
Dilip Kumar presented a different account in his autobiography, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, narrated to Uday Tara Nayar and published in 2014.
The actor acknowledged his attraction to Madhubala and described her as a lively, spirited person who helped him overcome his natural reserve.
However, he disputed the idea that Ataullah Khan was against their marriage. According to Dilip Kumar, Madhubala's father wanted the couple to work together in productions controlled by the family, effectively turning their marriage into a professional arrangement.
He wrote: "I had my own way of functioning and selecting projects and I would not show any laxity even if it were my own production house."
Dilip Kumar also said he feared that marrying under those circumstances would compromise the independence he had worked hard to establish. He maintained that he had discussed these concerns with Madhubala and her father but believed the situation was heading towards an inevitable dead end.
He concluded that marriage would not be good for either of them.
The two accounts leave an enduring question about what might have happened if they had found a way to reconcile.
