Jaadu became the face of Koi Mil Gaya, but the man inside the blue alien costume remained largely unknown to audiences. While Hrithik Roshan’s Rohit Mehra found a friend from another planet, there was an actor who brought that friendship to life by working behind a mask that concealed his identity.
His name was Indravadan Purohit. He had built a career across cinema and television with more than 300 movies long before Jaadu became his most recognisable role. His story reveals the human effort behind one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable alien characters.
Who Was The Man Behind Jaadu Of Koi Mil Gaya?
Indravadan Purohit played the role of Jaadu in Koi Mil Gaya. He had already worked extensively in Hindi cinema and television. Often referred to as Chhote Ustad, he appeared in supporting and comic roles across various productions.
His film credits include Nagina (1986), Veerana (1988), Bol Radha Bol (1992) and Daraar (1996). He also worked in television, appearing in shows such as Zabaan Sambhal Ke and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Later, he was associated with the children's fantasy series Baal Veer, in which he played Dooba Dooba.
These roles illustrate the range of work he undertook as a supporting performer. His career was not built around a single lead role or a recognisable screen persona; instead, he worked in an industry where character actors frequently moved between films, sitcoms and children's television.
Jaadu, however, demanded a different skill set. Purohit had to perform inside an elaborate alien costume. His face was hidden, but his physical performance had to make Jaadu appear curious, gentle and responsive to Rohit.
The role ultimately became Purohit's most widely remembered screen appearance.
Why Did The Actor Behind Jaadu Remain A Mystery?
Rakesh Roshan wanted Jaadu to surprise audiences. In a 2018 interview with Bollywood Hungama, the filmmaker explained why he kept the alien and spaceship out of the film’s promotional campaign.
He said, “If I had made the viewers aware of the alien and spaceship element, then it would have been too much for them, and they might have stayed away from theatres.” He added, “Viewers were astonished when they saw Jadoo as they didn’t see it coming.”
This deliberate effort to preserve Jaadu’s mystery also meant that the actor inside the costume, Indravadan Purohit, remained largely unknown to audiences. His identity received wider attention in 2014, when photographs of him as Jaadu surfaced online, nearly 11 years after the film’s release.

How Was Jaadu Created? Inside The Painstaking Process Behind Koi Mil Gaya's Alien
Jaadu's design began with Rakesh Roshan's and Australian artists James and Lara. The filmmaker wanted an alien with large, expressive eyes and a height comparable to that of children, ensuring that Jaadu could appear approachable rather than intimidating.
Hrithik recalled in his 2023 interview with The Times of India that the first sketch immediately established the character's look. Turning that drawing into a functioning, on-set creation, however, took months of work.
Jaadu was an animatronic character. His eyes and hands had to move in coordination with the emotions conveyed in each scene. This required careful synchronisation between the mechanisms, the actor's movements and the timing of the scene.
Hrithik explained the scale of the challenge: “During the shoot, we would often take about 4 to 6 hours to shoot a single scene with Jaadoo as the eyes and hands had to be manually synced, to bounce back the emotions that were being exhibited in the scene.”
He added that the process involved repeated takes, with Rakesh ensuring that the final shot matched the intended emotion. The technical demands meant that even a seemingly straightforward exchange between Rohit and Jaadu could require hours of filming.
The costume itself presented further difficulties. Published accounts have reported that the animatronic headpiece weighed around 15 kilograms and took close to a year to create. Reports also stated that Purohit needed oxygen after filming scenes because the heavy, restrictive costume made breathing difficult.

What Was Koi Mil Gaya About?
Released on August 8, 2003, Koi Mil Gaya was directed by Rakesh Roshan and starred Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Rekha. The science-fiction drama followed Rohit Mehra, a young man who establishes contact with an extraterrestrial being after encountering an alien spacecraft.
The arrival of Jaadu changes Rohit's life, giving the film its central relationship. Rather than presenting the alien as a threat, the story built its emotional core around friendship, acceptance and the connection between two outsiders.
The film became the starting point for the Krrish franchise, followed by Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013).
