Arshad Warsi’s Circuit from Munna Bhai MBBS is one of the most comic characters in Bollywood cinema. His street-smart attitude, deadpan reactions and unwavering loyalty to Munna Bhai left a lasting impression.
But Circuit was not always Circuit. The character’s name was originally Khujli. Years after the movie’s release, Arshad Warsi shared that he objected to the original name because he felt that Khujli would limit how audiences perceived the role.
The actor pushed director Rajkumar Hirani to reconsider it. It helped give the character a nickname that better captured his temperament and personality.
As a result, both the name and appearance of Circuit changed.
Why Was Arshad Warsi Against The Name ‘Khujli’?
In an interview with Prabhu Chawla in 2024, Arshad Warsi discussed that the original name would create a wrong preconception of his character. “The original name of the character Circuit was Khujli. His clothes and his antics were very different,” he said.
He added, “Naam sunte hi aapko lagta hai yeh sirf khujata rahega. Usse zyada kya hi karega. Toh woh pura package kharab ho jata hai.”
Warsi’s point was that the name immediately brought scratching to mind of the audience, leaving little room for a more distinctive character. He believed the name, clothes and mannerisms needed to work together rather than reduce the role to a single gag.

How Khujli Became Circuit?
Tyrewala, who wrote the film’s dialogues, also revealed that the character’s name dated back to an earlier casting plan.
Speaking to Cyrus Broacha, Tyrewala recalled that Shah Rukh Khan had been associated with the role of Munna Bhai, while Makrand Deshpande was expected to play his companion. At that stage, the character was called Khujli.
“When Arshad came on to the film, he did some rationalising, saying, ‘What is defining this guy? He seems to lose his temper at the slightest provocation, so he has got a short circuit, and that’s how the name Circuit happened,” Tyrewala said, according to The Indian Express.
Tyrewala described Circuit as “infinitely more memorable and more evocative” than Khujli. He also clarified that Khujli was a name Hirani had come up with, rather than a finalised name.
