Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa, best known for his impactful villainous roles in films and for portraying Priyanka Chopra’s coach in the biopic drama Mary Kom, has passed away at the age of 68. His demise marks the end of an era, leaving the film industry and his admirers in deep mourning. The news of his death was confirmed by the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) on Saturday, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues and fans alike.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also expressed his condolences, taking to his Facebook account to pen a heartfelt note in remembrance of the late actor and to offer support to his family during this difficult time.
He wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Sunil Thapa, whose powerful performances especially as Rate Kaila left an indelible mark on Nepali cinema. His talent and legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace."
CINTAA wrote on their official X account, "CINTAA mourns the passing of veteran actor Mr. Sunil Thapa on 07 February 2026. Actively shooting for Ram Nam Satyo Ho until late last night, he remained dedicated to his craft till the very end. Born on 17 May 1957, his contribution to Nepalese cinema is immense and irreplaceable. Funeral rites will be held on 08 February 2026. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and the entire film fraternity. Om Shanti."
Born in Dang, Nepal, Sunil Thapa featured in more than 300 Nepali films over a prolific career. He earned widespread recognition for his iconic portrayal of ‘Rate Kaila’ in the film Chino, a role that cemented his status as one of Nepali cinema’s most memorable actors.
In the 2014 biopic Mary Kom, Thapa played the pivotal role of the coach who mentors and transforms Priyanka Chopra’s character into a formidable boxer. Most recently, he appeared in The Family Man Season 3, where he essayed the character of David Khuzou, a respected leader and the MCA chief in Nagaland.
