Durald Arkapaw receives recognition for her work on the vampire movie Sinners, which employs wide-format IMAX cinema to vividly depict Mississippi in the 1930s. She is the first female of color to receive the Best Cinematography award.

Ludwig Goransson has received his third Oscar for Best Original Score, this time for the thriller about vampires, Sinners. Sinners is the ninth project he and filmmaker Ryan Coogler have worked on together while they were in film school. Goransson has previously won an Oscar for writing the soundtracks for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Coogler's comic book smash Black Panther.

As usual, there is a period during the awards ceremony to pay tribute to well-known figures from the entertainment and film industries who have died within the past year.

Actress Catherine O'Hara, who enthralled viewers for almost 50 years in movies like Home Alone and TV series like Schitt's Creek, received a special farewell. Robert Duvall, renowned for his parts in iconic movies like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, and Diane Keaton, who took home the Best Actress prize for the romantic comedy Annie Hall in 1977, were honoured at this year's in memoriam homage. Rob Reiner, the filmmaker of heartwarming movies including The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally, received the most poignant tribute of the evening.

A travel ban issued by the Trump administration prevented Palestinian actor Motaz Malhees, star of the Oscar-nominated film The Voice of Hind Rajab, from attending the awards ceremony.

There was some Indian representation at the Oscars, even though there was no nomination for an Indian feature film. Geeta Gandbhir, an Indian-American filmmaker, was nominated twice for documentaries, demonstrating the impact of Indian creativity on the international scene.

Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, was India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category. In the movie, two friends from rural India pursue careers as police officers in an effort to gain respect and social acceptance.

With 13 nominations, Paul Thomas Anderson's comedy One Battle After Another is not far behind.

With a record-breaking 16 nominations, Sinners became an overwhelming contender and became one of the most nominated movies in Oscar history.

The Academy Awards weekend schedule is set for March 14–16, and Hotel Bel-Air will host the celebrations. Filmmaker James Cameron gave visitors a tour of Lightstorm Entertainment Studio on the first day, and then there was a dinner sponsored by Rolex at Soho House West Hollywood. The evening's dress requirement was smart-casual.
