Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat was a Bollywood shooting location long before it became one of the most recognisable celebrity residences in the country. Anil Kapoor has now revisited that chapter, revealing that he had filmed his 1988 film Tezaab at the property before Shah Rukh acquired it.
The actor shared the anecdote on Star Plus' reality show India Ke Top 1%, while interacting with contestants about how they would spend the ₹1 crore prize money. When a contestant said she wanted to buy a house like Mannat, Anil recalled his association with the property and his friendship with Shah Rukh, including the superstar's early days in Mumbai.
"I remember him buying Mannat right before my eyes. I had also shot for Tezaab at that property, before it became his home," Anil said.
Anil Kapoor Recalls Meeting Shah Rukh Khan Before His Bollywood Debut
During the interaction, Anil spoke about his first meeting with Shah Rukh Khan, which took place even when Shah Rukh did not make his Bollywood debut.
Recalling the encounter, Anil said Shah Rukh had visited him while he was shooting for Benaam Badshah, which was released in 1991.
"Shah Rukh sahab and I have been very close friends for many years. He had come to meet me while I was shooting for Benaam Badshah," he said.
Anil added that he recognised the young actor's potential during their first meeting. "When I saw him and looked into his eyes, I felt that he would become a very big star."

Was Tezaab Shot In Mannat?
Anil's revelation also brings attention to an interesting piece of Tezaab's musical history: the male version of Ek Do Teen.
The original song, featuring Madhuri Dixit, became one of the biggest highlights of the 1988 film. Sung by Alka Yagnik and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, it was choreographed by Saroj Khan.
However, the song was initially intended to feature only Madhuri. A July 2020 report by Bollywood Hungama, written by Subhash K Jha, revealed that Anil wanted his own version after watching the rushes of Madhuri's dance number.
He persuaded director N Chandra to record a male version, which was sung by Amit Kumar and reportedly shot in Mannat.
A November 2023 Times of India report, quoting film critic Dilip Thakur, identified Mannat as the location for the male version's exterior shots.

Shah Rukh Khan's Carter Road Days And His Dream Of Owning Mannat
Anil also offered a glimpse into Shah Rukh's life before he acquired the Bandra property.
Recalling their meetings in Mumbai, the actor said Shah Rukh initially lived with friends before having a flat on Carter Road. The two would meet there, and Shah Rukh had spoken about wanting to own a grand bungalow overlooking the sea.
"He, too, dreamt of owning a grand, sea-facing bungalow, and he fulfilled that dream," Anil recalled.
Shah Rukh eventually acquired the Bandstand property from businessman and film producer Bharat Shah around 2000.
Mannat Was Known As Villa Vienna Before Shah Rukh Khan Acquired It
Mannat's history goes back much further than its association with Shah Rukh. According to a March 2025 Indian Express report, the heritage mansion was built in the late 19th century.
Mumbai-based history enthusiast Debasish Chakraverty told the publication that it was built by Raja Bijai Sen of Mandi for one of his Ranis.
Another account, shared by Adil Gandhy of the neighbouring heritage property Kekee Manzil, attributes its construction to his maternal great-grandfather, Maneckji Bottlewala.
The property acquired the name Villa Vienna and subsequently changed hands before being bought by Bharat Shah. Shah Rukh later acquired it and turned it into his family residence.
