The Delhi Crime actress Shefali Shah is known to be a private person, living her personal life away from the spotlight. That makes the references to her marriage, divorce and starting over in her new book, The Audacity Of Being: A Sort Of Memoir, particularly revealing.
The actor was previously married to fellow actor Harsh Chhaya. They got married in 1994 and separated in 2000, after six years together.
But if readers are expecting The Audacity Of Being to finally reveal the reason behind Shefali’s and Harsh’s divorce, the answer is NO.
Shefali has specifically said she has not named anyone in the book or mentioned what happened. Instead, she mentions the experience and feeling she had when a marriage stops working.
“I'm not naming anyone in the book. I'm not even getting into what happened or didn't happen. I'm just talking about what happens on a general scale when people get married, and nobody's prepared for a divorce,” she said in an interview with Indian Express.

The actor worked with Shefali Shah in Zee TV’s Hasratein. The show revolved around complicated relationships and infidelity. Shefali played Savi, while Harsh played KT, a married man involved in an extramarital relationship. The two were married in real life at the time.

Why Did Shefali Shah Divorce Harsh Chhaya?
There is no public official confirmation about why Shefali Shah and Harsh Chhaya got divorced.
In a 2022 conversation with Pinkvilla, the actress said she had devoted a “long, long chunk” of her life to the relationship and had worked hard at the marriage. She also spoke about having grown up with the belief that marriage meant a “happily ever after”, only to realise that this was an idea rather than a guarantee.
Shefali recalled reaching a point where she thought, “Okay, this can kill me. I can’t do this anymore,” and said she eventually moved out and lived alone for the first time.
She also spoke about the importance of feeling valued, confident and able to experience joy in a relationship.
However, Shefali did not ever publicly attribute the divorce to one specific event or accuse Harsh of a particular act. Her comments describe a relationship that had become unsustainable for her.
What Harsh Chhaya Said About Divorce?
In a 2026 interview with The Lallantop, he said he could see the relationship was “hitting a dead end” and that he knew eight or nine months before the separation that it was coming.
In a 2024 conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Harsh called the separation “pretty tough” but described the marriage as a closed chapter after more than two decades. He also said that he and Shefali were no longer friends or in regular contact, although he would not feel uncomfortable speaking to her if they happened to meet.
In an earlier interview with Hindustan Times, Harsh said the separation hurt, but he was not surprised. He said he believed it was better to separate than remain in a marriage when neither person knew where it was going.
Harsh has also spoken about how he dealt with getting separated from Shefali Shah. He revealed that he went through several difficult months, including regret and anger, before eventually moving on.

What Happened To Shefali And Harsh After Divorce?
Shefali married filmmaker-producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah in 2000. They have two sons, Aryaman and Maurya, and have also worked together professionally.
Harsh later married actor Suneeta Sengupta in 2003. He has continued to work across television, films and streaming projects.
