Tamil filmmaker and producer Atlee shared a big dream at the success meet for Baththa, starring Vijay Sethupathi. "I'd love to take a film like Baththa to the Oscars, and wish it had a journey similar to that of Parasite (Korean Oscar winner)," he said.

The period action-comedy-drama Baththa hit theatres on October 1, 2026. The Tamil movie has now completed five days in cinemas, and as expected, saw a dip in collections on the weekday after a strong box office run over the weekend.

What We Know About Baththa?

Set against the backdrop of 1986 retro Madras, the movie follows a feared local gangster named Baththa, played by Vijay Sethupathi.

Things take a turn when an eight-year-old boy accidentally locks him inside a deserted school restroom. What starts off as a bizarre, almost comic situation gradually turns into the emotional heart of the film, as an unlikely bond forms between the hardened criminal and the child, pushing Baththa to confront a softer, more vulnerable side of himself.

Baththa marks the third collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and director Balaji Tharaneetharan, following Tharaneetharan's directorial debut Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (2012) and Seethakaathi (2018).

Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, Baththa is produced by Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare, and presented by Tamil filmmaker Atlee.
