In a historic milestone for Tamil cinema, Nithilan Saminathan's 2024 hit crime thriller Maharaja is officially heading to Hollywood. The production team confirmed on September 16, 2026, that an international studio has acquired the remake rights, making Maharaja the first Tamil movie to earn an official American adaptation.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram revealed that the Hollywood deal materialised after the Tamil movie performed exceptionally well in Asian markets.

Speaking about the upcoming project, Producer Sudhan Sundaram shared, "Following the success of the film in China, where the film did very well both at the box office and on OTT, we were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights. They are now trying to set up the project with an A-list star. The film is likely to go on floors by next year."

Addressing social media rumours regarding Matthew McConaughey taking over Vijay Sethupathi’s role, Sundaram stated, "Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm."

Released in June 2024, Maharaja stars Vijay Sethupathi alongside Anurag Kashyap, Natty Subramaniam, and Sanchana Namidass.

The story revolves around a quiet barber who approaches a local police station to report a stolen dustbin named 'Lakshmi'. What initially appears to be a bizarre complaint soon unspools into a dark, complex tale of revenge and hidden trauma.

The original Tamil film is currently available to watch on Netflix. In addition to its theatrical run, Maharaja became the most-watched Indian film on Netflix for 2024.
