Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay's wife Sangeetha Sornalingam has reportedly withdrawn the divorce plea filed in Chengalpattu court. On Friday, Sangeetha attended the proceedings through video-conferencing and withdrew the petition.
In February, Sangeetha filed for divorce from Vijay in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, seeking dissolution of their marriage.
The proceedings have faced multiple adjournments. On June 15, Sangeetha indicated that she wanted to withdraw the petition and appeared via video conference.
Last month, the hearing was deferred after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in court, with their lawyers representing them instead.
What did Sangeetha allege in the plea?
Sangeetha had alleged in the plea that she discovered in 2021 that Vijay was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress.
She claimed that she was given multiple assurances that the relationship would end, but it continued. This led to emotional distress and a gradual breakdown of their marriage.
Sangeetha alleged that the actress’ social media posts with Vijay caused her and their children emotional distress and public humiliation. She also claimed Vijay distanced himself from the family and withdrew emotional, physical and financial support.
Sangeetha further alleged financial restrictions and said her attempts to reconcile through legal notices and personal meetings failed.
She then filed a divorce petition before the Chengalpattu court under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, seeking dissolution of their marriage. The petition reportedly alleged adultery, mental cruelty, neglect and desertion.
