Verity Ending Explained
In the film's final stretch, Lowen sets up a baby monitor in Verity's room, hoping to catch her faking her condition. It works. Verity isn't as paralysed as everyone believes.
How Did Verity Die?
Once Jeremy reads the manuscript, both he and Lowen are convinced Verity is dangerous. Jeremy kills her in a fit of rage. Lowen helps him cover it up, telling him exactly what to do so the police don't suspect anything. Together, they dump her body in the lake.
A year passes. Jeremy and Lowen are now expecting a baby. The book they finished together becomes a massive success, and life seems to be falling into place.
As they prepare to leave the Vermont house for good, Lowen finds a letter hidden under a floorboard in Crew's room.
The letter is from Verity, written to her son. It changes everything.
Verity explains that the manuscript was never meant to be read. It was just a writing exercise, something she did to get into a villain's mindset for her books. She wasn't actually the monster the manuscript made her out to be.
And there's more.
The letter reveals Jeremy had been drugging her, and he's the one responsible for the accident that nearly killed her. Verity says she faked her paralysis to stay safe from him, waiting for the right moment to escape with her son, Crew.
That one letter flips the entire story on its head.

What's Next For Jeremy And Lowen?
In the final scene, Jeremy calls out to Lowen, ready to leave the house behind. She wipes her tears, hides the letter, and walks downstairs to join him, seemingly choosing to stay with him anyway.
The film closes with a clip of Verity from an old interview, where she talks about loving to blur the line between fact and fiction, keeping readers guessing.
Lowen's closing narration drives the point home: there's no way to know for certain what was real and what wasn't when it came to Verity.
The film leaves it entirely up to the viewer to decide what they believe.
