Rajinikanth has been clear about not doing movie sequels. On many occasions, he has said a successful first film shouldn't be extended simply by adding a few new elements. That is why the superstar turned down proposals for Baasha 2 and Petta 2.

“I’m generally not keen on sequels because I feel they take the first part, add a little extra flavour, and turn it into another film,” Rajinikanth said at the Jailer 2 Super Show.

But when he saw Jailer after its OTT release, he found an unfinished conflict, giving the sequel a narrative foundation that he felt the other proposals lacked.

Why Rajinikanth Rejected Baasha 2 And Petta 2?

Rajinikanth revealed that he was approached several times for Baasha 2 by the movie’s production house Sathya Movies. Late producer RM Veerappan envisioned Manicham, the auto driver whose gangster past catches up with him in the original film, being forced to confront that history again.

The proposal did not interest Rajinikanth. He also declined the idea from director Karthik Subbaraj for Petta 2, which would have extended Vijay Sethupathi’s character from the 2019 film.

As Rajinikanth confessed, his objection to making sequels was because of a lack of a creative approach to add another instalment to an already successful movie without having a strong reason. His remarks do not suggest that he ruled out sequels altogether; rather, he wanted the story to justify it.

Why Did Rajinikanth Accept Jailer 2?

Rajinikanth confessed that he accepted Jailer 2 after he rewatched the movie following its OTT release. He said that at the end of the movie, the antagonist Varma warns that a larger network stands behind him and that its members will not leave Muthuvel Pandian, the protagonist, alone.

“Towards the end, when I was about to end Varma’s character, he says there’s a bigger network and that they wouldn’t spare him,” Rajinikanth said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

He also said that Varma’s international business connections establish the scale of the operation behind the antagonist. Those details, he felt, created a conflict that could naturally extend into another film.

“So, the story setup is perfect,” Rajinikanth said, adding that Muthuvel Pandian also has the backing of powerful criminals and dons in Nagpur jail.

Director Nelson Dilipkumar Was Also Initially Hesitant

When speaking about Jailer 2 at the pre-release event, he also revealed that even director Nelson was not immediately convinced by the idea.

The actor approached Nelson with the possibility of continuing Jailer, but the director initially felt they had already extracted the maximum from the first film.

Nelson took about a month to reconsider the idea before returning with a more developed script with Anirudh Ravichandra as the composer.
