The National Green Tribunal (NGT) will hold a hearing on December 16 regarding the Bandhwari landfill, prompting the Gurugram Municipal Corporation (GMC) to begin preparations for the disposal of 15.21 lakh tonnes of accumulated waste. The task of assigning disposal work to agencies could be finalised this month, officials said.

The issue was discussed at the High Power Works Purchase Committee meeting held in Chandigarh on Monday. Waste disposal at Bandhwari has been stalled for the past year, causing a steady rise in the landfill’s quantity.

Currently, 2,200 tonnes of waste arrive daily at Bandhwari, 1,200 tonnes from Gurugram households and 900-1,000 tonnes from Faridabad, although no agency is currently handling its disposal. Correspondence has been exchanged to stop Faridabad waste from reaching Bandhwari, but dumping continues.

To mitigate environmental impact, GMC officials have installed view cutters to prevent the waste from being visible outside the landfill, developed a green belt, and are transporting leachate to the Behrampur STP via tankers. XEN Sandeep Sihag stated that the orders issued by the NGT will be complied with and that work will be promptly assigned to ensure timely disposal.

-January 2023: 3,043,000 tonnes of waste present

-Jan-Dec 2023: 606,000 tonnes added; 1,650,000 tonnes disposed

-Jan-Nov 21, 2024: 584,000 tonnes added; 1,716,000 tonnes disposed

-Total waste dumped to date: 4,233,000 tonnes

-Total waste disposed of to date: 3,366,000 tonnes

-Current waste at Bandhwari: 1,521,000 tonnes
