To curb open dumping and the use of single-use plastic, the Gurugram Municipal Corporation has rolled out a digital fine system in collaboration with IDFC Bank in Manesar. Under the initiative, 30 Point of Sale (POS) machines have been provided to assistant sanitation inspectors across the corporation's jurisdiction.
Commissioner Ayush Sinha informed that 30 assistant sanitation inspectors have been recruited through HKRN and assigned to different villages to oversee sanitation work. Their responsibilities include monitoring cleanliness, maintaining attendance of sanitation agency staff, and inspecting sanitation infrastructure in their designated areas.
The inspectors have been trained to operate the POS devices, which will be used to issue online fines for violations such as dumping waste in the open, using polythene bags, burning scrap waste, and releasing STP water in public spaces. Receipts will be issued on the spot, and violators can pay penalties through cash, UPI, or card.
According to officials, since the deployment of these inspectors, a noticeable improvement has been observed in sanitation efforts within the corporation's area. Last month, a total of 283 fines amounting to Rs 1.76 lakh were issued, including Rs 1.42 lakh collected from cases related to polythene use, where around 37 kg of plastic was seized. Additionally, 57 fines worth Rs 35,000 were imposed for open dumping of waste.
With POS machines now in operation, the Municipal Corporation expects better transparency and easy monitoring of fines issued through each device, further strengthening enforcement against sanitation violations.
