Gurugram Police is introducing a new initiative to improve the public's perception of the police, modeling its approach on practices in foreign countries. Police personnel will now adopt a friendly and respectful manner when interacting with vehicle drivers.
New Protocol For Traffic Stops
When stopping a driver for any check, police personnel will follow a new procedure:
- They will begin by apologising to the driver for stopping them and acknowledging the inconvenience caused.
- Documents will then be checked, and the driver will be treated with complete respect throughout the inspection.
- This respectful treatment will continue even if a deficiency is found in the driver's documents.
- After the check is complete, the police personnel will thank the driver.
"Friction-Free Policing" Directive
This change is part of a broader emphasis on "friction-free policing," as directed by the Director General of Police (DGP). The DGP's focus is to ensure there is no lack of respect for people from the police's side, and several guidelines are being implemented on the ground to achieve this.
On Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Rajesh Mohan conducted a special tour of the DLF Phase One police station area, including Cyber City, Sikandarpur Power House, Nathupur T-Point, Bristol Chowk, MG Road, MGF Mall, Silver Oaks, and Khushboo Chowk. During the tour, he gave directions regarding the new approach to all zonal officers and other traffic police employees present.
The DCP stated that the method for how to behave respectfully with people has been explained to the force.

Additional Guidelines Issued
Along with the new protocol, the DCP provided further instructions:
No Unnecessary Stops: No driver will be stopped unless they have broken a traffic rule.
Electronic Enforcement Areas: In areas where electronic enforcement (cameras) is active, there will be no physical deployment of police. Instructions have been given that people should not be troubled by police personnel in these areas.
Emphasis on Traffic Solutions: During the tour, emphasis was also placed on finding solutions to Gurugram's traffic problems.
