The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in Gurugram has begun filling a large pit on the service lane in Narsingpur that was created during the cleaning of a nearby culvert. Officials expect the repair work to be completed by the end of this month. While one side of the service lane has been filled, work on the other side is ongoing.
Months Of Hardship For Commuters
For months, the project has caused significant hardship for local commuters. The closure of the service lane—a key access route for offices in Narsingpur and Sector 37—forced drivers to take a long detour via Hero Honda Chowk throughout the entire monsoon season. The open pit had rendered more than four kilometers of the service lane unusable.
Lingering Safety And Drainage Concerns
The four-meter-deep pit was dug to lower an earthmoving machine to clean the culvert. However, the project is drawing criticism because the NHAI is now filling the pit without implementing a permanent solution for water drainage, which was the original problem.
Furthermore, the cleaning process has reportedly caused large cracks to appear in an adjacent wall, which residents now fear could collapse at any time.

17 Years Of Neglect
This was the first time the culvert, which was constructed in 2008, had been cleaned in 17 years. Narsingpur has three such culverts, or small bridges (puliya), built under the highway to manage water flow, highlighting a widespread and long-standing maintenance issue in the area.
