To alleviate heavy traffic congestion on Gurugram's Golf Course Extension Road, one of the city's busiest corridors, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has prepared two potential solutions: a flyover or an underpass. The final decision on the project will be made at an upcoming meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
The proposed development targets a six-kilometre stretch from Ghata village to Vatika Chowk on the Gurugram-Sohna highway. The project aims to decongest five major intersections, including the Golf Course Road T-point, Kadarpur Road intersection, and the areas near Pioneer Park and St. Xavier's School.
Comparing The Two Options
The authority is currently weighing the pros and cons of each proposal:
Underpass:
Cost: Approximately Rs 658 crore.
Advocates: State Industry and Commerce Minister, Rao Narbir Singh, has recommended the underpass to align with the aesthetic development of the original Golf Course Road. It would also prevent the obstruction of views from surrounding colonies and sectors.
Challenge: GMDA officials have raised concerns about a high risk of waterlogging, as the area is near the Aravalli foothills and the Badshahpur Nala (monsoon drain). This could, however, be managed by installing a large pumping station and sump well.

Flyover:
Cost: Approximately Rs 578 crore.
Advocates: GMDA officials consider the flyover a more practical solution, primarily because it avoids the issue of waterlogging.
Challenge: A flyover could obstruct the visual landscape for residents in the surrounding high-rise buildings and sectors.
The final approval for either the flyover or the underpass now awaits the high-level GMDA meeting.
