In a major move to clean the Yamuna River, Industry and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh has given strict orders that from now on, only treated water can be released into the drains that flow into the river.

The minister chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday, which was attended by senior officials from all major development and pollution control agencies in Gurugram, including the GMDA, HSVP, the Municipal Corporations of Gurugram and Manesar, and the Haryana Pollution Control Board.

The minister gave clear instructions that all development plans for Gurugram must be "future-proof." He emphasised that since Gurugram is vital to the country's economy, all new projects must be designed to handle the needs of a growing population and an expanding city for at least the next 20 years.

"No project should be carried out unless it is fully capable of meeting the needs of the future," he stated.

Focus on Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)

Rao Narbir Singh ordered officials to ensure that all existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in their areas are working properly. He also said that if any new STPs are planned, they should be built at the final discharge points of the drainage lines to be most effective in stopping water pollution before it reaches the river.

Proper and Timely Use of Environmental Funds

The minister gave strict instructions to the Pollution Control Board about the use of Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) funds. This is money collected from companies for projects that protect the environment.

He ordered that this money must be spent quickly and according to the rules, without any delays or carelessness. He stressed that the funds should be prioritized for public welfare activities such as:

- City development

- Water conservation

- Planting trees

- Pollution control

- Improving health and education facilities

The meeting was attended by top officials, including the CEOs and Commissioners of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the Gurugram and Manesar Municipal Corporations, and the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HSVP).
