State Bureau, Srinagar | More than 150 representatives of Jammu and Kashmir's civil society unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday, demanding that the central government restore full statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir without further delay.

According to a statement issued by the ruling National Conference, the meeting, held at the SKICC in Srinagar, was chaired by party president Dr Farooq Abdullah and state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. In the unanimously passed resolution, all representatives urged the Central government to fulfil its promise and restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible.

Chief Minister Receives Feedback From Civil Society

Many useful suggestions and important feedback were received at the meeting. The statement said that this resolution reflects the collective and unanimous opinion of the civil society representatives present at the meeting and reiterates the widespread demand for immediate statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, CM Abdullah expressed his gratitude to the civil society representatives who attended the meeting in a post on X. He said that the meeting was very productive and his father received many useful suggestions and important feedback from various quarters.

"Thankful to all the representatives of civil society of Kashmir who accepted the invitation. The meeting was extremely productive & Dr Sahib was able to get a lot of useful feedback and good suggestions. The meeting passed a unanimous resolution calling on the Union Government to fulfil its promise & restore FULL statehood to J&K without further delay," the chief minister's X post read.

Jammu And Kashmir Has Been UT Since 2019

Earlier in 2019, the Centre declared that Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The northern state was divided into two separate Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. In the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls 2024, Home Minister Amit Shah had assured the restoration of statehood after the elections.
