A black box has been recovered from the crash site of the Air India aircraft that hurtled to the ground, killing more than 240 people, two police sources told Reuters on Friday.

Students, professors, family members, and staff exit with their luggage from BJ Medical College's doctors' hostel amid high security, where the London-bound Air India flight crashed yesterday. Many people can be seen with injuries and damaged belongings.

Union Minister and BJP national president JP Nadda condoles the demise of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, who died in the Air India Flight Crash in Ahmedabad yesterday. "He was a true soldier of the BJP and a dutiful public servant. The demise of Rupani ji is an irreparable loss for the BJP family. His thoughts and work in the field of development and public service of Gujarat will always be remembered," he said in a post on X.

PM Modi on Friday met the family members of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who lost his life in the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Rupani was heading to London to meet his wife and daughter when the ill-fated Air India plane crashed into a building in the Meghaninagar area near Ahmedabad airport.

"Met those injured in the aftermath of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, including the lone survivor and assured them that we are with them and their families in this tough time. The entire nation is praying for their speedy recovery," PM Modi tweeted.

Relative of a deceased passenger of AI-171 plane crash says, "She (the deceased Jaishreeben Patel) was my relative. She was going to London after her marriage. Her husband was staying in London. She was shifting there...She had dreams of living abroad, that's why she was going to London..."

Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad has recovered a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the debris of the Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, killing all passengers and crew members except one. "It's a DVR, which we have recovered from the debris. The FSL team will come here soon," an ATS personnel member said.

A DVR in an aircraft is a specialised system designed to capture, store, and manage video footage from cameras installed onboard. These systems are crucial for security, training, operational reviews, and compliance with aviation safety standards. While DVRs focus on video, traditional Flight Data Recorders (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR) capture instrument metrics and audio, respectively, for crash investigations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that he is in touch with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand regarding the Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Further, Jaishankar offered profound condolences to the families and offered full support in this hour of grief. The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick with 242 passengers crashed in Meghaninagar area at 1:39 pm (IST) shortly after it took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. 241 people were killed in the crash.

Indian-origin dentist Nirali Patel was the lone Canadian citizen killed in the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, a media report said. Nirali Patel, 32, who lived in Etobicoke, Toronto, was travelling back to Canada from a “social trip” in India when the unfortunate accident happened, CTV News Toronto reported on Thursday.

A day after the deadly plane crash in Ahmedabad, the bodies of six victims were handed over to their families after identification on Friday, police said. At least 265 bodies were sent to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for post-mortem after the crash on Thursday. Of these, only six victims were identified as their faces were intact, Inspector Chirag Gosai said.

Former US President Donald Trump reacted to the Air India tragedy, calling it one of the worst crashes in aviation history. In a statement he said, "The plane crash was terrible. I've already told them if there is anything we can do. It's a big country, a strong country. They'll handle it, I'm sure. But I let them know that anything we can do, we'll be over there immediately. It was a horrific crash. It looks like most are gone. They actually may have a couple of survivors... Nobody has any idea what it might be. We saw the plane. It looked like it was flying pretty well. It didn't look like there was an explosion. Just looked like the engines had maybe lost power. That is a terrible crash. It's one of the worst in aviation history..."

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu tweets, "Following the tragic incident in Ahmedabad, a formal investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in line with international protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Additionally, the Government is constituting a high-level committee comprising experts from multiple disciplines to examine the matter in detail. The committee will work to strengthen aviation safety and prevent such incidents in future."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the media following the crash of Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, describing it as a heartbreaking tragedy for the entire nation. He said the Centre was alerted within 10 minutes of the incident and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called immediately. Shah added that he had spoken to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state Home Minister and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

“There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Sadly, the aircraft was carrying nearly 1.25 lakh litres of fuel, and due to high temperatures, there was no chance of survival,” Shah said.

He added that DNA testing is underway to identify victims, with over 1,000 samples expected to be tested, including those from relatives abroad. He confirmed the collection of DNA from the deceased and said bodies will be handed over after verification. Shah also noted that one passenger had survived and that every agency was working in close coordination on rescue efforts.

"The death toll will be announced after DNA verification," Shah said, confirming he had personally visited the crash site and participated in a review meeting where all aspects were discussed. He added that the Civil Aviation Minister has directed a swift and thorough investigation.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the Ahmedabad plane crash, calling the loss of lives "utterly devastating." In a post on X, she offered condolences to the grieving families and acknowledged the passing of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, remembering him as a leader dedicated to public welfare.

The European Union Delegation to India lowered its flag to half-mast as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Ambassador Hervé Delphin stated that this gesture honours the memory of all victims of the tragic incident.

Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will probe the Air India plane crash at the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, according to an official. Air India's Dreamliner Boeing 787 aircraft, involved in the crash, had 242 people on board, including 12 crew members. AAIB Director General and Director of Investigation at the agency, among others, will be leaving for Ahmedabad, the official said.

Under the civil aviation ministry, AAIB is responsible for the classification of safety occurrences involving aircraft operating in the Indian airspace into accidents and serious incidents.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday reached the BG Medical College, where the London-bound Air India plane crashed earlier in the day. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi are also with him. The ill-fated plane was carrying 230 passengers, 10 crew members and 2 pilots. As of now, there are reports of only one survivor.

The Ahmedabad Police has issued a list of 25 people, who were injured in the Air India flight crash today.

As many as five medical students were killed and several injured after Air India AI-171 flight crashed into the hostel of the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The deceased includes four undergraduate students and a postgraduate resident.

The Air India flight AI171 gained an altitude of 625 feet before crashing seconds after takeoff, according to flight tracking platform FlightRadar. “The signal from the aircraft was lost at 08:08 UTC (13:38 local time) at 625 feet, less than a minute after take off,” it said.

Vijay Rupani, former chief minister of Gujarat and BJP leader, is reported to be among the passengers of the Air India plane which crashed near Ahmedabad airport today.

Air India issues a passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information regarding the Ahmedabad plane crash.

As many as 61 international passengers are onboard Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft. These include 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese and 1 Canadian passenger.

Adani Group Chairperson Gautam Adani tweets, "We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragedy of Air India Flight 171. Our hearts go out to the families who have suffered an unimaginable loss. We are working closely with all authorities and extending full support to the families on the ground."

The Air India flight crashed on a hostel for doctors, according to the police. "Preliminary, we came to know that an Air India flight bound to London has crashed at the doctors' hostel. Within 2-3 minutes, police and other agencies reached the spot. Almost 70-80 per cent of the area has been cleaned. All agencies are working here," news agency ANI quotes a senior police officer as saying.

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal is an LTC with 8200 hours of experience. The copilot had 1100 hours of flying experience. As per ATC, the aircraft departed from Ahmadabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It gave a MAYDAY Call to ATC, but thereafter, no response was given by the aircraft to the calls made by ATC. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Minister of Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu, and took stock of the Air India flight crash incident in Ahmedabad. The Minister informed the Prime Minister that he is rushing to Ahmedabad to oversee rescue and relief operations on the ground. The Prime Minister has directed the Minister to ensure all necessary support is extended immediately and asked to be kept regularly updated on the situation. All relevant agencies are on high alert, and coordinated efforts are underway," says Office of Rammohan Naidu.

The Director General of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is headed for the crash site along with a team for investigation, ANI reports citing Ministry of Civil Aviation sources.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He has asked them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance is extended to those affected in the wake of the air mishap, news agency ANI reports citing sources.

All operations at the Ahmedabad airport have been shut till 5 PM today.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel responds to the incident, saying "I am saddened by the accident of Air India passenger plane breaking down in Ahmedabad." The chief minister has ordered immediate rescue and relief operations, as well as immediate treatment to the injured passengers. Officials have been instructed to make arrangements for this on a war footing, he says.

The Gujarat CM has instructed the creation of a green corridor to transport injured passengers for treatment and to hospitals. Instructions have also been given to ensure all treatment arrangements on priority.

"Honourable Union Home Minister Shri Amitbhai Shah also talked to me about this plane crash. Has assured full support of NDRF teams and Central Government for rescue and relief operations," says Patel.

The 242 people onboard the Air India flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick included two pilots and 10 cabin crew.
