A man allegedly killed his three minor sons and later died by suicide at his residence in Andhra Pradesh's Nandyal district on Thursday. Police are probing the exact circumstances leading to the children’s deaths, an official said, noting that more information will become clear after the investigation.

Allagadda Deputy Superintendent of Police K Pramod Kumar, said, “The man allegedly killed his three minor sons on Wednesday and later hanged himself at their house in Uyyalawada village." According to preliminary investigations, the family was facing financial difficulties, which may have prompted the man to take this extreme step.

Police also reported that the deceased’s wife had died by hanging in August, further compounding the family’s tragedy. A case has been filed, and an investigation is currently underway.

Suicide Trends In 2025

India continues to grapple with a serious mental health crisis, as suicides remain a major concern for the country. According to official data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) , 1,71,418 suicides were reported in 2024, which roughly translates to 12.3 deaths per one lakh population.

Out of this, men accounted for 72.8 per cent of the suicides, while women made up 27.2 per cent. Among age groups, those aged 18-30 years continue to be the most affected, accounting for 35 per cent of all suicides. Roughly 13,000 students die by suicide every year, a figure rising faster than population growth trends.

The data has pointed to another alarming indicator, which is the rise in suicides among children under 18, which increased by 5.68 per cent since 2023. According to NCRB data, more than 10,000 children have died by suicide each year since 2020.
