Bangladesh Election 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday dialled BNP Chairperson, Tarique Rahman, after his party -- Bangladesh Nationalist Party -- swept the Bangladesh elections, emerging as the single largest party by winning 209 seats out of the total 297 up for grabs.
During his call, PM Modi reaffirmed India's support for a peaceful atmosphere in the neighbouring nation, which witnessed months of unrest and economic disruption following the student uprising in 2024 and the subsequent ouster of former PM Sheikh Hasina.

"Delighted to speak with Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections. I conveyed my best wishes and support in his endeavour to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh," PM Modi wrote on X after his call with Tarique Rahman, who is poised to become the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
"As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples," he added.
PM Modi's congratulatory call followed a decisive victory for the BNP, with the party and its allies securing 212 seats. The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats, Islami Andolan Bangladesh took one, and independent candidates claimed seven.
Further breakdown shows BNP winning 209 seats independently. Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats, NCP six seats, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis two seats, Khelafat Majlis one seat, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) one seat, Ganosamhati Andolon one seat, and Gono Odhikar Parishad one seat.
Tarique Rahman Set To Take Oath As Bangladesh PM Tomorrow
Tarique Rahman, the son of the late former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia, is poised to become the next prime minister of Bangladesh. According to local media reports, Rahman is expected to take the oath as PM on February 14.
However, the swearing-in may get delayed as the results in several seats are still being processed, and the gazette notification will take a few more days. Under the Bangladesh constitution, the new government cannot be sworn in unless the gazette notification reporting the results is released.

Rahman, who returned to Dhaka in December after nearly two decades abroad, faces immediate challenges in restoring political stability, reviving investor confidence and rebuilding key industries - including the garment sector - after prolonged turmoil.
The BNP thanked its supporters soon after election trends became clear and called for special prayers on Friday for the nation and its people. "Despite winning by a large margin of votes, no celebratory procession or rally shall be organised," the party said in a statement.
