In a major social welfare initiative, the BJP government in West Bengal has increased the monthly pension for senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500. The decision was announced through a notification issued by the state secretariat, Nabanna.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the government's priority is to strengthen the social security net for vulnerable sections of society. The Chief Minister's Office announced the initiative on X, stating, “Guided by the vision of inclusive growth, Hon'ble CM Shri Suvendu Adhikari has approved the enhancement of monthly financial assistance under Old Age, Widow, and Disability Pensions from Rs 1000 to Rs 1500, effective August 1, 2026, via DBT.”

Enhanced Pension From August

According to the notification issued by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department, all eligible beneficiaries under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) and the state's social welfare pension schemes will now receive Rs 1,500 per month, up from the existing Rs 1,000.

The revised pension has been approved by the Finance Department and will come into effect from August 2026. The enhanced amount will be credited directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system beginning September 1, ensuring transparent and timely payments.

Who Will Benefit?

The increased pension will apply to eligible beneficiaries under:

- Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme

- Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme

- Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme

The move is expected to benefit millions of elderly people, widows, and persons with disabilities across the state by providing greater financial support.

Budget Allocation And Implementation

The state government said the additional financial burden has been accommodated in the 2026-27 Budget under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department.

District Magistrates, District Panchayats and Rural Development Officers, and other implementing agencies have been directed to ensure immediate execution of the order. The State Urban Development Agency has also been tasked with ensuring the timely disbursal of the enhanced pension to eligible beneficiaries in urban areas.
