Bengaluru News: Six faculty members of The Oxford Dental College, Bengaluru, have been suspended by the college management following the death of a 23-year-old student by suicide. The decision was communicated through an official notice dated January 12. The management said the suspension will remain in force until further notice, while an internal inquiry continues.

Those suspended include senior lecturers Anmol Razdan, Shabana Banu, Faika Kolkar and Alba Dinesh, Reader Sindhu R and Professor Sushmini Hegde. All are from the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology.

Bengaluru Dental Student Found Dead At Residence

The action follows the death of Yashaswini, a third-year dental student of the college. She was found hanging at her residence on Friday. Police said a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Based on a complaint filed by her mother, Pramila, the police booked the lecturers under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment to suicide. The FIR names all six suspended faculty members.

Bengaluru News: Suicide Note And Family’s Allegations

Police confirmed that Yashaswini left behind a suicide note stating that she alone was responsible for her death and that no one else should be blamed. The note has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to verify the handwriting.

Despite the contents of the note, the family has alleged that Yashaswini faced continuous harassment at the college. Her mother claimed the student was repeatedly humiliated by lecturers over the past year.

Claims Of Humiliation And Targeting

According to the complaint, Yashaswini had taken leave due to eye pain and returned to college the next day. She was allegedly reprimanded in front of other students for missing a seminar. Her mother also alleged that Yashaswini was often scolded for reaching class a few minutes late and was targeted over her dressing style.

The complaint further states that when Yashaswini did not respond to such remarks, the lecturers allegedly gave her lower marks in seminars. Pramila also alleged that the harassment went further, with the lecturers making remarks about her daughter’s skin colour and questioning her decision to become a doctor, asking why she wanted to pursue the profession “with this face”.

Student Protest And Investigation

Following her death, students staged a sit-in protest outside the morgue, demanding strict action against those responsible. Police said the probe is ongoing and further steps will be taken based on the findings.

Yashaswini was the only child of her parents, Parimala and Bhudevaiah, police added.
