State Bureau, Patna: Following the state government's decision, the Home Department's Special Branch on Saturday issued an order granting Z-category security to former Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi.
Under the new order, the two leaders will be granted Z-category security, including the deployment of bulletproof vehicles for their Quick Response Team (QRT). The Home Department has instructed the state Director General of Police (DGP) and the DGP of the Special Branch to ensure strict compliance with this order.
From SPG Row To Z-Category Security
This security upgrade comes exactly one month after the Bihar government removed Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi’s Z-plus cover and provided Special Protection Group (SPG) security on June 4.
Following that decision, both leaders returned their security in protest, sparking an intense political controversy.
RJD workers took over the security arrangements at the 10 Circular Road residence, guarding the premises in shifts. During this period, Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav often travelled without official security, drawing sharp criticism of the state government from the opposition.
Now, a month later, the state government has revised its decision, granting Z-category security to the leaders. The decision to restore Z-category security also comes after Rabri Devi shifted from the official residence at 10 Circular Road to her private home in Kautilya Nagar.
What Is Z-Category Security?
The Z-category security involves the deployment of a dedicated team of 22 to 24 security personnel who will manage their safety round the clock. This force includes four to six commandos from the National Security Guard (NSG) or paramilitary forces such as the CRPF or ITBP.
Furthermore, the security cover also includes escort vehicles, mobile security during movement and a permanent security cordon at their residence.
