Delhi Mayor Election: The Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Pravesh Wahi, was elected mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday. Wahi secured 156 votes, with 14 councillors of the Indraprastha Vikas Party backing him. Monika Pant, also a leader from the saffron party, won the deputy mayor post with 156 votes. Congress candidate Hazi Zaraf received nine votes. 

Who Are The Duo?

Wahi is a BJP councillor from Rohini East, while Pant is also a councillor of the saffron party from Anand Vihar. Pant is an Ayurvedic Doctor by profession, and she held the post of General Secretary of Delhi Mahila Morcha in past.

Amid heavy security arrangements, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral elections were held on Wednesday, with major parties naming their candidates. As the electoral arithmetic was with the BJP, it made a clean sweep by winning both the mayor and deputy mayor posts.

The BJP had fielded Pravesh Wahi from Rohini East for the mayor's post, Monika Pant, councillor from Anand Vihar, for deputy mayor, Jai Bhagwan Yadav from Begumpur for the standing committee, and Manish Chadha from Paharganj.

AAP Has Not Participated In Election

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) decided not to participate in the election. Although AAP nominated Jalaj Choudhary from Shalimar Bagh for a standing committee seat. The Congress named Kabir Nagar councillor Haji Zarif for mayor and Mubarakpur councillor Rajesh Kumar Gupta for deputy mayor.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu appointed the outgoing mayor, Raja Iqbal Singh, as the presiding officer for the election.

What Was The Arithmatic Equation In MCD?

Going by the current numbers, the BJP had an edge with 142 votes, including 123 councillors, seven Lok Sabha MPs, one Rajya Sabha MP and 11 MLAs. The AAP has 105 votes, comprising 100 councillors, three MLAs and two Rajya Sabha members, with Swati Maliwal having recently quit the party and joined the BJP. The Indraprastha Vikas Party has 15 councillors, the Congress eight, while there are two independents and one vacant seat.
