JE News Desk: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) during his address in Bhopal, Congress and other opposition parties have criticised PM Modi's stand on UCC. The opposition parties asked the prime minister to address issues like poverty, price rise and unemployment in the country instead of UCC. In fact, the RJD said PM Modi should not make such issues an instrument of "dog-whistle politics".
Several opposition parties including Congress, AIMIM, and DMK accused the prime minister of trying to distract people from real issues. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the prime minister considers India’s diversity and pluralism to be a problem.
"In Islam, marriage is a contract. It is different for other religions. Will you mix them all? Will you (the PM) snatch away pluralism and diversity in the name of UCC? I challenge PM, you have 300 MPs... Abolish the Hindu Undivided Family. Go and tell the Sikhs in Punjab about UCC and see what their reaction is..." Owaisi said.
His remark on PM Modi's UCC stand brought a sharp reaction from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson, advocate Gaurav Bhatia. "Owaisi read Quran, not the constitution...If his law degree is correct then give your suggestions to the committee," the BJP spokesperson said during a television debate.
On Tuesday, PM Modi addressed over 10 lakh booth-level BJP workers across the country during his Madhya Pradesh visit. The prime minister said opposition parties are instigating people in the name of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Criticised the opposition parties meeting held in Bihar recently, PM Modi said all the corrupts joined hands in Patna. He said oppositions have come together to escape the anti-scam crackdown.
On June 23, the Opposition parties met in Patna to chalk out a strategy to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Leaders of more than 15 opposition parties attended the meeting.
