As the controversy over Sonia Gandhi's 'poor thing' comment on President Droupadi Murmu grew, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge defended her and alleged that the media and BJP were misrepresenting her remarks. Kharge reiterated that the Congress has always upheld the dignity of the president's office and stated that the BJP leaders and some members of the media are misrepresenting Sonia Gandhi's words in order to conceal the dire economic situation.

Kharge retaliated against the Modi government, alleging that the BJP had humiliated the President by excluding her from the opening of the Ayodhya Ram Temple and the new Parliament building.

"Her Excellency the President was insulted by the Modi government on the very day when he was not invited to the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament," Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X.

"The Indian National Congress and our leaders can never insult Her Excellency the President or any citizen. This is not our culture. The BJP had deliberately kept our current President and previous President away from both the Temple of Democracy and the Ram Temple," he added.

The BJP attacked the Congress for its former president Sonia Gandhi's comments during Murmu's speech to a joint session of Parliament, calling them "deeply disrespectful" and highlighting the opposition's "continued disregard" for the dignity of the highest constitutional office. Kharge's comments followed the BJP's full-scale attack on the Congress.
