Nitin Nabin Shares Resolution, Condemns Congress' Stance

BJP president Nitin Nabin presided over a meeting of new office-bearers and later shared the resolution on X, stating, "The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today, August 22, 2026, passed an important resolution regarding the respect for Vande Mataram and the protection of its historical legacy."

The BJP "strongly condemns and unequivocally opposes" the Congress Working Committee's decision on August 19, 2026, reaffirming its 1937 resolution limiting the singing of Vande Mataram to the first two stanzas at Congress programs, Nabin said.

He stressed that the party will oppose any attempt to subject the national song to "communal pressure, political appeasement or narrow vote-bank politics". "No compromise on the honour, legacy of Vande Mataram will be accepted for political convenience or appeasement," he added.

Nationwide Campaign

Nabin announced that the BJP will launch a campaign to spread the history, meaning, national significance, and glorious heritage of Vande Mataram to every corner of India, affirming that the "BJP will protect the honour, dignity, heritage and national character of the Purna Vande Mataram."

As a part of the campaign, the BJP will disseminate Mahatma Gandhi's statement describing Vande Mataram as an "anti-imperialist slogan" associated with the "purest national sentiment."

Furthermore, the party resolved to launch an awareness campaign, especially among the younger generation, so that the complete national song, comprising six stanzas, and its history are not forgotten, ensuring future generations understand the memories of India's independence associated with Vande Mataram, Nabin said.

Vande Mataram Row

The row over Vande Mataram continues following the enactment of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2026, which extends statutory protection to the national song.

The bill was passed first by the Rajya Sabha on July 29, 2026, and then by the Lok Sabha on July 30, 2026. It became law after receiving Presidential assent in the first week of August. Under this law, intentionally insulting the national song, disrupting its rendition, or stopping people from singing it attracts legal action and penalties of up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
