All three candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha polls got elected unopposed on Thursday as the nomination of the only candidate in the fray, Congress's Meenakshi Natarajan, was rejected by the Returning Officer (RO).

BJP candidates Tarun Chugh, Rajneesh Aggarwal and Mahesh Kevat have got a walkover, even as Congress has challenged Natarajan's nomination rejection in the Supreme Court, which is set to hear the plea on Friday. Natarajan's nomination was rejected on June 9, based on a complaint by the BJP.

The ruling party accused her of non-disclosure of a case against her in Hyderabad. The BJP alleged that a former corporator, A Srilatha, has filed a petition against Natarajan in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Hyderabad. Srilatha has alleged that Natarajan gave political survey work to a man named Kumbham Shivakumar Reddy, who molested her and issued death threats.

The Congress, however, rejected the charges of non-disclosure, saying that there is no case or FIR against Natarajan, except a notice, which does not require to be mentioned in the affidavit as per rules.

BJP wins all Gujarat seats unopposed

In the neighbouring state of Gujarat, too, the BJP got a walkover as no candidate was pitted against 4 BJP candidates by either Congress or Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The state currently has 11 Rajya Sabha seats, out of which MPs on 4 seats are set to retire soon. Congress has only a single MP, Shaktisinh Gohil, whose seat also went to the polls.

However,  in 2022, Congress managed to win only 12 seats in the state assembly elections and to win the Rajya Sabha, votes of at least 37 MLAs were required. Since Congress did not have enough numbers, it did not field any candidate.

Raju Shukla, Jitendra Kanjaria, Mansinh Parmar and Mukesh Rathwa, all new faces, have won the polls. With their victory, BJP now holds all 11 Rajya Sabha seats.
