Counting of votes for the fifth general elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) began on September 26 amid tight security arrangements across Assam. The elections, held on Monday, September 22, covered all 40 seats in the BTC spread across five districts - Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur, all under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Kokrajhar district alone has 12 constituencies, where 100 candidates were in the fray. Of these, 43 candidates contested from the Kokrajhar sub-division, 48 from the Gossaigaon sub-division, and one from Parbatjhora. Across the five districts, a total of 316 candidates contested this time.
The election saw a high-stakes battle between the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), led by current BTC Chief Pramod Boro, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the ruling party in Assam. BJP leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, held a series of rallies in the region during the campaign.
