Delhi Metro Update: The Union Cabinet has cleared Phase-V A of the Delhi Metro Rail Project, approving a major expansion aimed at improving connectivity across key parts of the capital. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 12,015 crore, will add 16 kilometres to the existing metro network and is expected to be completed within three years.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision while briefing the media on Cabinet approvals. The expansion will be implemented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and is part of the broader Phase-V development of the Delhi Metro.

Delhi Metro Phase-V A: What The Expansion Includes

Under the approved plan, 13 new metro stations will be built as part of Phase-V A. Of these, 10 stations will be underground, while three will be elevated. The new stretches are designed to ease pressure on busy roads and strengthen links between residential areas, business districts and transport hubs.

The additional corridors are expected to improve last-mile connectivity and offer faster travel options in areas that currently depend heavily on road transport.

Delhi Metro: Which Corridors Are Covered Under Phase-V A

The project will be developed across three major corridors. The Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha stretch will be the longest, covering 9.9 km at a cost of Rs 9,570.4 crore. The Aerocity to Airport Terminal-1 corridor will span 2.3 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,419.6 crore. The Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj corridor will extend 3.9 km and is projected to cost Rs 1,024.8 crore.

Once completed, these corridors are expected to reduce travel time and ease congestion in several high-traffic zones of Delhi.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Announces Delhi Metro Expansion

Announcing the decision, Vaishnaw said, “We all know how the Delhi Metro has positively transformed the lives of residents of Delhi and everyone who travels in and out of the city. With this expansion, a new chapter will be added to the Delhi Metro. For this purpose, a project worth Rs 12,015 crore has been sanctioned.”

He added, “The Phase-V A expansion will add 16 kilometres to the Delhi Metro network. With this addition, the total length of the Delhi Metro is expected to cross 400 kilometres, further strengthening urban mobility in the National Capital Region.”
