Delhi News: The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi is set to redesign major intersections across the city to ease traffic congestion and enhance road safety. The initial phase of the work will take up five of the city’s most accident-prone and congested intersections, the Hindustan Times quoted Minister Parvesh Verma as saying on Thursday.

The work of appointing consultants to help redesign these intersections in line with road safety principles is in the final stage. The intersections identified for redesigning include those near Metcalfe House, Mukarba Chowk, Kingsway Camp junction, ITO junction, and one critical location on Ring Road. Notably, these points were surveyed two years ago, but no initiative was taken.

“An agency that was consulting with PWD has surveyed nearly all major intersections across the city to come up with problem areas and solutions. This study was done about two years ago, but no action was taken on it. We are planning to resolve the problems related to black spots identified along PWD roads by introducing design changes. These will help reduce congestion as well as accidents,” the report further quoted Verma.

A comprehensive redesign project aims to improve traffic flow and safety at major intersections in Delhi. The proposed design includes features such as tabletop crossings, optimised lane mergers, and upgraded traffic signals. Following an analysis of 896 intersections, five high-priority areas have been identified for improvement, with solutions to be presented by a consultancy agency on Friday.

PWD will invite proposals from experienced design consultants, with the aim of starting groundwork within the next few months.

According to PWD officials, the agency in 2023 submitted detailed findings based on simulations intended to improve traffic flow and reduce crash risks.

Delhi's traffic challenges and road safety concerns continue, with experts citing poorly designed intersections as a major contributing factor to congestion and accidents.
