DELHIITES on Saturday afternoon witnessed moderate rainfall accompanied by a hailstorm in several parts of the city, providing some respite to people from the hot weather. The national capital has recorded a minimum temperature of 18.2 degrees Celcius, which is two notches above the season’s average.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms during the day. The weather department in its forecast said that the eastern and northern parts of Delhi have experienced moderate rainfall and hailstorm.

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy has also predicted about western disturbances getting deep. “This month we are seeing western disturbances being deep. These deep western disturbances when interacting with Indian regions with the low-level wind that generally comes due to summer heating increase the severity of thunderstorms,” she said.

“Yesterday we issued an orange alert. We had hailstorms and thunderstorms across India. Today we expect the weather to be focused in east peninsular India, east-central India, and east and northeast India. Tomorrow and the day after it will shift to east and north India,” Sen further said.

The IMD in its recently issued forecast stated that a thunderstorm with light to moderate rain and gusty winds up to 30-40 kmph would occur over northeast Delhi (Karawal Nagar, Dilshad Garden, and Seemapuri) and surrounding areas.

The weather department also stated that hail precipitation would take place over Burari, Civil lines, Kashmere Gate, Delhi University and Noida, and nearby areas.

It is expected that light to moderate intensity rain would occur in northeast, southwest, northwest and west Delhi including Rohini, Badli, Model Town, Azadpur, Pitampura, Delhi University, Mundka, Paschim Vihar, Punjabi Bagh, Rajouri Garden, Patel Nagar, Budha Jayanti Park, Burari, Kanjhawala, Jafarpur, Nazafgarh, Dwarka, Palam, Indira Gandhi Internation Airport (IGAI) and in adjoining areas, as reported by news agency PTI.

The weather department has also predicted thunderstorms with light intensity in parts of Haryana including Kaithal, Narwana, Assandh, Rajaund, and Safidon in Haryana and nearby areas. Earlier on Friday, Delhi experienced traces of rain in the isolated areas which were too low to be measured.
