Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Lamba has been removed from duty at the Jantar Mantar protest site after a video surfaced showing him slapping a female protester during the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) 'Chalo Sansad' rally in Delhi.

What Happened During CJP's July 20 Parliament March?

Thousands of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) supporters gathered at Jantar Mantar on July 20 for a 'Chalo Sansad' march to protest alleged examination irregularities and demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

During the demonstration, a video went viral on social media showing Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sandeep Lamba slapping a female protester. The incident sparked widespread outrage, leading to Lamba's removal from duty at the Jantar Mantar protest site.

Officer's Conduct Raised In High Court

The controversy reached the Delhi High Court on Wednesday during a hearing of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) challenging alleged police brutality during the protest. Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing the petitioners, presented video footage showing Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba slapping a female protester without provocation, demanding that the officer be held accountable for his actions.

Sankaranarayanan further argued that security personnel violated established protocols by firing tear gas directly at the crowd instead of first deploying water cannons, which should have been used as a preliminary measure.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia has issued notices to the Delhi Police, the Union Government, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), directing them to submit their responses within four weeks. The court has also ordered authorities to preserve all records, CCTV footage, and video recordings related to the police action during the protest, Jagran.com reported.

TMC MP Saket Gokhale Files Complaint

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale has filed a police complaint against Additional DCP Lamba over the slapping incident. Gokhale stated he took the step after the government informed the Delhi High Court that no one had approached the police to file an FIR in the matter.
