The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has found 196 drugs to be of substandard quality in the market in its latest report.
The national drug regulatory body formed a report based on a monthly surveillance activity. The report includes 60 drug samples from Central Drugs Laboratories and 136 from State Drug Testing Laboratories.
Accordingly, a note issued by the Union Health Ministry read, “As per routine regulatory surveillance activity, the list of Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) and Spurious drugs is being displayed on CDSCO portal on a monthly basis. For the month of April-2025, Central Drugs Laboratories have identified 60 Drug Samples to be Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) and State Drugs Testing Laboratories have identified 136 Drugs Samples as Not of Standard Quality (NSQ)."
"Identification of drug samples as NSQ is done based on failure of the drug sample in one or the other specified quality parameters. The failure is specific to the drug products of the batch tested by the Government Laboratory and it does not warrant any concerns on the other drug products available in the market," it stated.
Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium Eye Drops manufactured by Martin & Brown Biosciences, and Pantoprazole GastroResistant Tablets manufactured by Mancare Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. were found of sunstandard quality.
Additionally, Sumo Gold tablets (Paracetamol+ Nimesulide), AMPIVEE-500 Injection, Ciprodac 250, and Telmijack-H, among others. Moreover, in April 2025, a drug sample from Bihar was identified as a spurious drug, which was manufactured by an unauthorized manufacturer using a brand name owned by another company.
The drug was DECADURABOLIN 50 Injection. The matter is under investigation, and action will be taken as per the Act & Rules.
It must be noted that the national drug regulatory body takes regular action based on monthly surveillance identifying NSQ and spurious medicines in collaboration with state regulators to ensure that these drugs are identified and removed from the market.
