Jagran Correspondent, East Delhi: A couple living in a small area of Bardhaman in West Bengal, wanted to buy a house from their landlord. They had already spent Rs 1.5 lakh on home renovations. Debosmita Paul, an assistant professor at DU and the landlord, who lived alone in a flat in Delhi, was determined to evict her tenant in Bengal. She was not willing to sell even an inch of her maternal grandfather's house to anyone.

Bengal Couple Plan Murder After Watching Serial

The tenant couple plotted the professor's murder after watching numerous crime serials for a week. In a highly professional manner, they travelled 1,400 km by train to Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave area on June 3, entered the professor's flat, and killed her by hitting her on the head with a pestle.

The couple brought their 13-year-old child with them to avoid suspicion. They committed the crime within half an hour, locked the flat from outside, and fled back to Bengal. They returned to Bengal on June 4 and resumed their normal lives.

After the murder, no one was in the flat except the dead professor. The three masked suspects were captured on CCTV cameras installed at the society's main entrance. From there, the police began their investigation.

A chain of cameras installed on the streets was scanned. The footage showed the couple taking a cab from the society to Anand Vihar Railway Station. The accused have been identified as Ramprasad Das (42) and his wife Banashreedas (36). The accused runs a stationery shop in Bengal. Police recovered the professor's mobile phone, the muslin used in the crime, and a bag from the accused.

“Ramprasad Das had been living as a tenant in the professor's maternal grandfather's house since 2023. The professor took care of the house. She wanted to vacate the house. The accused were unwilling,” said Rajiv Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East District.

Came To Delhi By Train, Stayed At Guest House Using Fake Aadhaar Card

No one imagined that a small shopkeeper could come from Bengal to Delhi and murder a professor in broad daylight at a society. During police interrogation, the accused, Ramprasad Das, revealed that he arrived at the New Delhi Railway Station by train on June 3 with his wife and child. From there, they went to a guesthouse in Dallupura, about one and a half kilometre from the professor's home.

They booked a room using the Aadhaar cards of a woman from Bengal and a man from Bihar. They went to the society that same day around 4 pm. They knocked on the professor's flat door. When the professor opened the door, she was shocked to see them. They told the professor they wanted to buy land in Bengal and would not vacate it.

As soon as the professor refused, the woman held the professor's hands and her husband hit her on the head with a pestle. He then cut the vein of her hand. After this, they changed their clothes in the professor's flat. One by one they went out of the society. They took a cab to Anand Vihar Railway Station, from there they took a rickshaw to New Delhi Railway Station. From there they left for Bardhaman by Poorva Express. They reached Bengal on June 4.
