Election Results 2026 Highlights: Vijay's TVK Approaches Congress For Alliance; EC Paves Way For Govt Formation In West Bengal

The Election Commission has issued a notification for the constitution of a new West Bengal assembly, formally completing the electoral process. This paves the way for a new government formation.

"With this, the process of constituting the new assembly in West Bengal is complete from the commission's end. It enables the next steps in government formation as per laid-down procedures," PTI quoted a senior EC official. 

The victory in the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly Election is not merely a victory of the BJP but a victory of the people's will, will of their aspiration and wish, said BJP Spokesperson Mita Nath Bora.

"This victory is not merely electoral. It is a powerful expression of the trust, aspirations, and collective will of the people of Assam. We extend our deepest gratitude to every voter across the state, from the towns and cities to the remotest villages, who participated in this democratic celebration with enthusiasm and conviction. The people of Assam have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to development, good governance, and a brighter future," ANI quotes Bora. 

The Congress on Tuesday named AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik and treasurer Ajay Maken as observers to gather feedback from newly elected MLAs in Kerala, in a move aimed at deciding the party’s chief ministerial candidate, PTI quoted sources.

According to sources, both leaders are expected to travel to Kerala once the Congress Legislature Party meeting is scheduled.

West Bengal Election Results: A BJP and a Trinamool Congress worker were killed in separate incidents of post-poll violence in West Bengal on Tuesday, police said. BJP worker Madhu Mondal died after being allegedly beaten up by TMC workers during a victory procession in the New Town area on Tuesday evening.

Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal said, “TVK president Vijay has requested the INC for support to form a Govt in Tamil Nadu. INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular govt, committed to protecting the constitution in letter and spirit. The INC is determined not to have the BJP, and proxies run the Govt of Tamil Nadu in any manner.”

The US President Donald Trump on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the BJP’s landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, according to a White House spokesperson.

"Just last month on their phone call, President Trump expressed to Prime Minister Modi his admiration and how lucky India is to have him as its leader. The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory," IANS quoted White House spokesman Kush Desai. 

A Trinamool Congress worker was killed in a clash in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday (May 5), as incidents of post-poll violence were reported across the state following the BJP’s landslide victory in the Assembly elections, PTI reported.

Officials said there were also reports of arson and vandalism at TMC offices in Kolkata’s Tollygunge and Kasba, as well as in Baruipur, Kamarhati, Baranagar, Howrah, and Baharampur. According to police, mobs carrying BJP flags were involved in these incidents reported since Monday afternoon.

A senior police officer said Abir Sheikh, a member of the TMC’s Nanoor Anchal Committee, was allegedly hacked to death during an altercation with another group at Santoshpur village under Nanoor.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, on Tuesday, celebrated the party's victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 at the BJP office in Kolkata after defeating West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabhanipore Assembly seat. 

K Pandiarajan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Tuesday described the party’s defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as a “temporary setback,” saying the organisation has the strength to stage a strong comeback.

"Don't forget that both the Dravidian parties together are still holding 120-plus seats. So, I don't think there's any rejection of the Dravidian party per se. There has been anti-incumbency against DMK, and I think the benefit of it has gone to TVK. In my view, I think AIADMK will bounce back. I think it's a temporary setback. I'm very sure the party has enough resilience; like a phoenix bird, it will come back," ANI quoted Pandiarajan.

BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, reacting to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s assertion that she would not resign despite her party’s defeat, said the matter is governed by constitutional provisions.

He noted that “everything is mentioned in the Constitution,” indicating that any further steps would proceed strictly as per legal and constitutional norms rather than political claims. His remarks come amid an escalating political confrontation following the election results.

Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay, the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK),  is scheduled to take the oath of office as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, ANI reported.

Atul Bora, president of the Asom Gana Parishad, on Tuesday said the party will hold a meeting of its newly elected legislators on May 6.

The announcement follows the BJP-led alliance’s victory in the Assam Assembly elections. Ahead of the meeting, Bora said the results reflected public support for the state’s development under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

"That is also expected. I told you earlier that we are expecting more seats this time. We won in nine seats in the last assembly poll, but this time we have won in 10 seats. The people have voted in favour of the development of the state under the leadership of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. We are holding the first legislative party meeting tomorrow," ANI quoted Bora.

"Will play our role as proactive opposition to raise voice for people's issues," PTI quoted Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi.

Addressing a press conference after the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, Mamata Banerjee said, “Our party offices have been targeted and captured in several places. There were even attempts to take over our headquarters yesterday, including at Abhishek’s (Banerjee) office, where incidents of stone-pelting and vandalism were reported. We have enough elected members with us. You cannot resort to such acts of intimidation and violence.”

"No question of me resigning, we were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy," Mamata Banerjee said.

Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP-led Centre of colluding with the Election Commission of India following the party’s landslide victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

She also launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the poll body after her party’s heavy defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, stating, “Our fight was not with the BJP, but with the EC.”

amilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Tuesday paid tributes to the party's ideological leaders and chaired a meeting of its newly elected legislators, a day after it secured victory with 108 seats in the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

Vijay is likely to resign from the Trichy (East) Assembly seat he won in Monday's Tamil Nadu election,  reports said on Tuesday morning. The actor is expected to keep his Perambur seat.

In a heartfelt message to supporters, MK Stalin posted on X thanking voters who backed the DMK-led alliance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, calling each vote a mark of trust. He noted that the alliance secured 1.54 crore votes, with only a narrow 3.52% vote share gap separating it from the winning party, and urged candidates to personally thank the electorate. Emphasising that the DMK would continue to serve the people, whether in power or in opposition, Stalin reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its ideology and the legacy of Periyar, Anna and Karunanidhi, while expressing confidence in a future comeback.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) President Thol Thirumavalavan, CPI(M) State Secretary Shanmugam, and Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Veerapandian are set to meet Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Chief and Tamil Nadu outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin at the DMK party office on Wednesday, a day after Tamilaga Vettri Kazagham (TVK) made a stellar debut in the Tamil Nadu assembly polls.

TMC reports post-poll violence with vandalism at party offices, while BJP denies involvement and blames rival factions.

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee shared a phone call in which Mamata Banerjee alleged irregularities during Bhabanipur counting, claiming intimidation at counting centres and removal of her agents. She further accused procedural lapses in handling EVMs and said the outcome would be legally challenged with supporting evidence.

A Durga temple in West Bengal's Asansol, shut for several years due to local tensions, reopened its doors to devotees on Monday following the BJP’s sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly polls.

“Chor, chor (thief),” BJP supporters chanted when Abhishek Banerjee, the chief minister’s nephew and second-in-command, walked into the Sakhawat Memorial Girls School on Monday, where votes from Mamata Banerjee’s own constituency were being counted. By afternoon, Bengal had turned saffron — and Banerjee’s 15-year government had been voted out in a political upheaval that carries the same shape as 2011, when her own street agitations ended 34 years of Left rule.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that PM Modi and home minister Amit Shah have done a good job in Bengal and Assam and “that's partially because they are very good at conducting elections”.

Superstar Mohanlal congratulated TVK chief Vijay for a spectacular debut in Tamil Nadu assembly elections, winning 108 seats in a 234-member assembly, falling only 10 seats short of the majority mark.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged all political players in Bengal to “move beyond” the vicious cycle of political violence which had engulfed it for decades. “As Bengal enters this new phase, I also appeal to other parties for change in habits. Today, when the BJP has won, not ‘badla’ (revenge) but ‘badlav’ (change) needs to be talked about; not ‘bhay’ (fear) but ‘bhavishya’ (future) should be spoken of,” he said.

Vijay-led TVK emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu by winning 108 of the 234 seats. The alliance talks to form his government is likely to begin today.

In a post on X, Shah congratulated and thanked the people of Assam for electing the BJP for the third time in a row. "This boundless affection and cooperation are strengthening our resolve to deliver even better services to you and fulfil your hopes and aspirations," Shah said in a post on X.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan stated that the party is reviewing the reasons behind Stalin's defeat in Kolathur. "We discussed the reason behind the defeat of CM Stalin from the Kolathur seat," he said.
